BYRD, Elva Mae Bartlett, 85, of Richfield Retirement Center, Salem, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 1996, at Catawba Hospital, Catawba. She was the widow of Oliver Sydney Byrd of Fries. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Aline and Nicky R. Andrews, Roanoke; grandsons, Christopher Ray and wife, Shannon Nowell Andrews, Midlothian, Mark Allen Andrews, Richmond; sisters, Grace B. Pearman, Danville, Nena B. Coleman, Woodlawn; sisters-in-law, Stella P. Bartlett, High Point, N.C., Ruth W. Byrd, Portsmouth; brothers-in-law, Calvert Willie, Fries, Elmer C. Williams, Galax, Don G. Byrd, Fries; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 1996, at Providence United Methodist Church, Fries, with Rev. Virginia Eminhizer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Byrd will lie in state one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
DINWIDDIE, Bonnie Sue, 53, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 1996, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born September 12, 1942 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Harold F. Landrus and Ruby Lee Harman Landrus. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Dinwiddie; two daughter s, Laurie M. Post, Lisa Melton, both of Birmingham, Ala.; a son, Mike Melton, Selma, Ala.; two stepsons, Robert J. Dinwiddie Jr., Benjamin David Dinwiddie, both of Bedford; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 26, 1996, at 4 p.m. from the Oakwood Cemetery, by the Rev. Ronnie Obenchain. The family will receive friends at the residence. DUNFORD, Carl Edward, 71, of Huddleston, died Thursday, July 25, 1996, after an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of 47 years of Violet Smith Dunford. Born on October 9, 1924, in Tyreeanna, he was the son of the late George Leslie Dunford and Rosetta Shanks Dunford. He was the beloved father of Holly D. Munson and her husband, Richard Lee, of Penhook, and of Linda D. Proffitt and her husband, William, of Richmond. He also is survived by two granddaughters, Julie A. Gunn and her husband, Steven, and Jessica L. Bradley, and one great-grandson, Stevie Gunn, all of Richmond. In addition, he is survived by one brother, George Leslie Dunford Jr. of Lynchburg, and he was preceded in death by another brother, William Earl Dunford. He also is survived by two nephews, Wayne Dunford of Huddleston and Michael Dunford of Lynchburg; one niece, Donna Dunford of Lynchburg; one aunt, Thelma Shanks Barker of Fishersville, and a number of cousins. Carl Dunford, Captain of Police, was retired in 1985 from the CSX Corporation Tr ansportation Division after 32 years of service. He was appointed to the Railroad Police Department, C&O Railroad, in 1953, and made Captain of Police in September, 1963. He supervised all railroad police matters from Newport News to Charleston, W.Va. He attended Phillips Business College, Virginia Tech Extension and graduated from 32 police schools throughout the U.S.A. He served six years with the U.S. Navy during World War II, three years on the USS Elden (DE264), and also served with the Naval Police Department and Shore Patrol in Norfolk. He was an active member of Staunton Baptist Church in Huddleston. In addition, he was a current honorary member of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Richmond; the Fraternal Order of Police, Piedmont Lodge No. 29; The Railroad Police Association, Staunton; the Elks Lodge No. 1065, Clifton Forge, and was an active member of the USS Elden Alumni Association. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Pembroke Hall and Dr. Frank Schmitt officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg. The American Legion Post #16 will provide full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg. JENKINS, Posey Patterson, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 1996. She was the daughter of the late Alex and Mary Carter Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jenkins; four sisters; three brothers; and one son. She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church during her younger years, but due to h er health was not able to attend for several years now. Survivors include her sister, Emma Briggs, Wytheville; a nephew that she raised, Raymond W. Patterson, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a niece who was her caretaker before she entered Avante Nursing Home, Frances Smith, Wytheville; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. JOHNSON, Rex Allen, of Detroit, Michigan suddenly departed this life, Monday, July 22, 1996 of an apparent heart attack. He was born June 21, 1950, in Botetourt County to the late, Dorothy Burrell Johnson and Clarence (Jack) Johnson. He had lived in Detroit for 40 years. He attended Aero Mechanic School and served in the United States Army. Rex was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Burrell Johnson and a baby sister, Gweneva Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory; his father, Clarence W. (Jack) Johnson, Eagle Rock, Va.; three daughters, Shatara, Kacie and Kori; one son, Rodney Allen, all of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Beatrice Mitchell (Nibby); three brothers, Ralph (Toy), Sylvester (Little Boy), Orlander (Lanny); one sister-in-law, Doris Johnson, all of Detroit, Mich.; eight aunts, Leona Burrell, Lenora Burrell, both of Zanesville, Ohio, Rebecca Johnson, Corrine Gentry of Detroit, Mich., Lillian (Peachie) Brown, of Gala, Va., Yvonne Toliver, Dianne Johnson, Troutville, Va., Evelyn Earldine Law, of Fincastle, Va.; six uncles, Norwood Beverly, Sacramento, Calif., Ralph Burrell, Bridgeport, Conn., Roy Burrell, Roanoke, Va., George Burrell, Fincastle, Va., Wilford Johnson, Troutville, Va. and Howard Johnson, Norfolk, Va.; a very special and devoted friend, Karen Lane, of Detroit, Mich.; and also a dear friend, Gary Hamilton, of Detroit, Mich.; and many other friends in Detroit; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends. MAHOOD, Nancye Canter, 84, of Mountain View, Calif., formerly of Winchester, Va., died Sunday, July 21, 1996. She was the widow of the late Francis V. Mahood of Roanoke, Va. She was a member of Questers International and P.E.O., as well as Trinity Methodist Church, Mountain View. Survivors include two daughters, Anne and Jane; son-in-law, Ray; one brother, Garland Canter, Berryville, Va., and two grandsons, Andrew and Matthew. Interment will be at Evergreen Burial Park. MANNON, Isabelle Altizer, 96, of Radford, died Wednesday July 24, 1996 at her home in the loving care of her children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Early Lacy Mannon; two sons, Robert Mannon and Lacy Mannon; two daughters, Helen Mannon and Louise Mannon. Surviving are five daughters, Elva Hale of Narrows, Margaret Elkins of Blacksburg, Edith Harless an d her husband Robert of Radford, Claudine Tice of Belspring, and Elizabeth Mannon of Radford; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 27, 1996 at 2 p.m. at the De Vilbis Funeral Home with Pastor Will Shewy officiating. Interment will follow in the West View Cemetery. MARTIN, Mary Alice Hawks, 71, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Richmond, died Friday, July 19, 1996. A native of Lambsburg, Mrs. Martin lived in Marietta 21 years. She was a graduate of Radford College and a member of Sandy Springs Christian Church, and the Canterbury Golf Club. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Edward L. Martin Sr.; daughter, Beth Ranson of Danville; three sons, Edward L. Martin Jr., Frank Martin and Neale Martin, all of Marietta; sister, Nancy Helton of Galax; three brothers, Tom Hawks of Hillsville, and Frank and John Hawks, both of Lambsburg; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews. PUGH, Bertha Floyd, 85, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 24, 1996. She was retired from Community Hospital and was predeceased by 3 grandchildren. QUESENBERRY, Burley Allen, of Willis, passed away Thursday, July 25, 1996 at Radford Community Hospital. He was a Veteran of World War II and retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry. Survivors include his wife, Imogene McPeak Quesenberry, Willis; two sons and daughters-in-law: Steve and Elizabeth Quesenberry, Willis, Joseph and Peggy Quesenberry, Floyd; two sisters, Opal Gordon, Edna Young, both of Radford; three grandchildren, Tammy Goad, Jessica Quesenberry, Emily Quesenberry; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Goad. REID, Harry, (``Elwood""), 76, of Brooksville, Fla., died Wednesday, July 24, 1996, at his residence. Born in Rockbridge County, Va., on March 7, 1920, he was the son of the late Harry Reid and Ola Duncan Reid. Mr. Reid moved to Florida 32 years ago and was the retired owner/operator of the Chevron gas station in Spring Hill. He was a charter member of Effinger Ruritan Club, and a past officer and member of First Presbyterian Church of Brooksville and Buena Vista, Va. He also was affiliated with the Rapps Mill Church. Surviving are his wife, Violet Reed of Brooksville; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Chester Jones of Brooksville; two brothers, Robert Reid of Roanoke, Va., and Fred Reid of Culpeper, Va.; a sister, Virginia Rawley of Mt. Solon, Va.; a granddaughter, Virginia Jones of Brooksville, and a great-granddaughter, Kristen Jones of Brooksville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 1996, at the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Barton Hellmuth officiating. Burial will follow in the Rapps Mill Church Cemetery. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Johnny F. and Deirdre Rickman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy L. and Gary Critzer, Alice M. and Michael Worley all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Chelsie Rickman, Michelle and Amanda Worley; two brothers, Charlie Rickman Jr. and Jessie Rickmon; four sisters, Mary Eubank, Ruby Caldwell, Helen and Rachel. ROBERTSON, Elizabeth Taylor Morgan, 79, of 207 Bee St., Princeton, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 24, 1996, in Community Hospital, Roanoke. Born August 2, 1916 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late William Z. and Anne Katherine Wright Morgan. She was a retired school teacher for the Mercer County schools, retiring in 1966 after 27 years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest. She was a 1939 graduate of Concord College and a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. She had lived in Princeton since 1936. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Garnet Morgan and Stuart Morgan. Survivors are her husband, Lawrence William ``Larry'' Robertson; one daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Clemons and her husband, Steve, of Salem; one brother, John C. Morgan of Riner; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Clemons and Steven Lloyd Clemons Jr. Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest in Princeton with Rev. Paul Feider officiating. Burial will follow in the Dublin Cemetery in Dublin. There will be no visitation. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. Agnes Guild. The George W. He was Chairman of the Board of Fralin & Waldron, and had been a realtor in the Roanoke Valley for over 50 years and served in the Army during World War II.
