Stacy M. Bielski of Christiansburg recently received a scholarship check from the UAW Veterans Committee of Local 2069. The scholarship is based on financial need, scholastic achievement and extra-curricular achievements.
Bielski is a rising senior at Bridgewater College. She is majoring in biology and is a member of the pre-med society. She recently was recognized as an All-American Collegiate Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy. She also was named an All-American Cheerleader for the Florida Citrus Bowl to be held in New Year's Day 1997. A 1993 graduate of Christiansburg High, she is the daughter of Marilyn Bielski of Christiansburg.
Jill Burnett Dickerson recently received her doctor of medicine degree from the University of Tennessee. She will enter residency training in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. Dickerson is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Society and a student member of the American Medical Association. She also served as co-coordinator of the Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble and was a member of the Sirens, a female accapella vocal ensemble.
She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles C. Burnett Jr. of Wytheville.
David B. Hare of Blacksburg received a Ph.D. in education administration from Virginia Tech in May. He will be headmaster at Dayspring Christian Academy in Blacksburg. Hare also received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech. He is the son of Euretta H. Hare and the late William A. Hare of Blacksburg.
David Moore of Blacksburg received a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy from Virginia Tech in May. He will work as a marriage and family therapist in Roanoke. Moore received his bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond. He also has a master of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a doctorate in ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the son of Paul and Ruth Moore of Blacksburg.
Marc Footen of Blacksburg won the post-secondary bronze medal in the Automotive Service Technology at the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) 32nd National Leadership Conference and Skills USA Championships. Footen is an automotive service technology student at New River Community College. He was a contestant at the conference, which was held in June in Kansas City, Mo.
General Motors Corp. sponsored Footen's attendance at the conference. Participants were students who were first-place state-level winners.
Jennifer Jebo, a student at the College of William and Mary, will participate in the 1996 University of New Hampshire Cambridge Summer Program. She is one of 50 students who will spend six weeks at Cambridge University in England. She is the daughter of Kathy Jordon and Jerry Jebo of Christiansburg.
Three area students received degrees from Concord College, W.Va, during the college's May commencement ceremonies. The students are:
Daniel G. Ferrell of Blacksburg, received a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in biology.
Christine E. Brackenrich of Rich Creek, received a bachelor of social work with a minor in psychology.
Stephen M. Holloway of Christiansburg, received a regent's bachelor of arts.
Martha Lee Baker of Blacksburg graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor of fine arts in theatre. At VCU, Baker appeared in several plays, including "Lear," "The Misanthrope" and " Song and Dance." She is spending the summer at the Allenberry Playhouse in Boiling Springs, Pa., where she will be featured in "Crazy for You" and "Sugar Babies." Following her summer performances, Baker will tour with Richmond's Theatre IV Children's Theatre Series as Sleeping Beauty.
Baker is a 1992 graduate of Blacksburg High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Baker of Blacksburg.
Sarah Martin of Pembroke is a 1996-97 John Emory Scholar at Emory & Henry College. Martin is a May graduate of Giles High School, where she was in the top ten percent of her class. Scholarship recipients must have excellent entrance exam scores, be active of a United Methodist Church and have a strong background in community service and church leadership.
At Giles High, Martin was president of the history club and was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended the Southwest Virginia Governor's School, Virginia Girls State and was honored for her athletic accomplishments with Virginia High School League letters. She also was an active member of First Pearisburg United Methodist Church and has served as a camp counselor at church camp.
Martin will receive a $5,000 scholarship during her first year at Emory & Henry. The scholarship is renewable in subsequent years, based on her academic performance. She is the daughter of Judy and Barry Franklin of Bluefield and Richard and Penny Martin of Pearisburg.
Dorothy Porter of Blacksburg is studying at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Oxford, England as part of St. Olaf College's international studies program. Porter will start her studies in September. Porter is a medieval studies major at the College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Porter of Blacksburg.
Radford native Dale Wyatt Klingelhofer is a doctoral candidate in polymer science at the University of Connecticut. He is recipient of the 1996 Stephanie H. Shaw Scholarship, which is given to a female graduate student in the polymer science program at the University's Institute of Materials Science. Klingelhofer received her undergraduate degree from in physics and engineering from Washington and Lee University. Klingelhofer already has accepted a position with Franklin International and will move to Columbus, Ohio, with her husband when she completes her degree.
Anne E. Thomas graduated in May with honors from the College of William and Mary with a degree in music and a minor in anthropology. Thomas was a Monroe Scholar at William and Mary. In December, she was initiated into the Alpha of Virginia Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She also is recipient of several music scholarships. She presented her senior recital on harpsicord in May. Thomas is spending the summer working as an intern at the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies in Washington.
Thomas graduated from Blacksburg High in 1992. She is the daughter of Beth and Jim Thomas of Blacksburg.
