ALLEN, Rosetta Hardman, 99, of Iron Gate, died Friday, July 26, 1996. Arrangements by Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

CLIFTON, Leota Goodpasture, 86, of Abingdon, died Thursday, July 25, 1996, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Claud Bradley Goodpasture and Ida Repass Goodpasture and was a life-long resident of Washington County. She was a graduate of National Business College. She was one of the founders and a co-owner of Clifton Mutual Insurance Agency. She was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, served on the Session and was a life member of The Presbyterian Women. She was a charter member of the local chapter of the National Federation of Business & Professional Women's Clubs and held many local and regional offices. She also served as Treasurer of the Virginia Federation of Business & Professional Women's Club. She held several offices in the Anna Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert J. Clifton and a brother, Malcolm ""Jack"" Goodpasture. Survivors include a brother, B.L. ""Pete"" Goodpasture, Roanoke; a nephew, Joe Goodpasture, Charlotte, N.C.; two nieces, Patsy G. Musick, Winchester, Va., and Janice G. Bussey, Abingdon; five great-nephews, John Goodpasture, Charlotte, N.C., Eric Musick, Manassas, Randy Musick, Charlotte, N.C., Brad Bussey, Abingdon, and Brent Bussey, Abingdon; one great-great nephew, Benjamin Musick; tw o great-great nieces, Beth Musick and Hope Goodpasture; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Goodpasture, Abingdon, and Elizabeth Goodpasture, Roanoke. A celebration of life will be conducted Sunday, July 28, at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert N. Lominack, Jr., the Rev. Robert R. Tolar, Jr., and the Rev. Joel Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be John Goodpasture, Eric Musick, Randy Musick, Brad Bussey, Brent Bussey, Luther Bussey, Eddie Musick and Ralph Repass. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Campbell Funeral Home. Campbell Funeral Home of Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

COLEMAN, Lillian N., 90, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 26, 1996. Arrangements are by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

HORNE, Mary Ann Flaherty, 34, of Salem and formerly of Fredericksburg, died on Saturday, July 6, 1996. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 1996 at her home. KING, Tressie M., 85, of Wirtz, died Thursday, July 25, 1996. Born October 4, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Posie Wyatt and Stella May Turpin Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Arthur King; and son, Clifford Gene Sublett. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Dyrlene Sublett, Lois Ann and Donald Childress, all of Wirtz; one son and daughter-in-law, Arthur W. and Debra King of Wirtz; two sisters, Lettie Tolbert of Dublin, Nora Whitlock of Belspring; one brother, Elmer Montgomery of Dublin; two grandsons, Mark A. and Jeffrey D. Law of Wirtz. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 1996, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hubert Sublett officiating. Burial will follow at 5 p.m. in the Montgomery Family Cemetery, Dublin. Friends may call at Lynch Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Saturday, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge of arrangements.

PERDUE, Curtis R. Sr., of Roanoke, died Friday, July 26, 1996. He was born February 26, 1926, and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Perdue was retired from Kroger Company. Surviving are his wife, Barbara B. Perdue; three sons, Stephen V. Perdue, Charlotte, N.C., Curtis R. Perdue Jr., Darryl A. Perdue, both of Roanoke; one daughter, Linda D. Perdue; three sisters, Hester Fringer, Ola Hutton, Erma Driscoll; one brother, Vernard Perdue, all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Dennis Perdue, Dee Ann Perdue, April Perdue. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 10 am to noon Saturday, July 27, 1996. Services will follow at noon in Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Earl Robertson and the Rev. RIBBLE, Gertrude Flora, 3310 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, Ky., died Thursday, July 25, 1996. She was the widow of William Henry Ribble, formerly of Roanoke. Her first marriage was to Robert H. Tomlilnson, Attorney, of Lexington, Ky., deceased in 1955. She was born in Nicholas County, daughter of the late Henry L. and Nettie F. Flora. She is survived by one stepdaughter, Susan Ribble Pratt, Waterville, Ohio; two grandchildren, William Hamilton Pratt and Margaret Alden Pratt; and several cousins. She graduated from the Lexington Senior High School and the University of Kentucky. She was a life member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Club. She organized the First Young Democrat Club in Fayette County, and was executive secretary of the Young Democrats of Kentucky. She was a former president of the Local Democratic Womans Club of Fayette County and had served four years as Deputy County Clerk of Fayette County, former member and president of the American Association of University Women, the Altrusa Club, the Womans Club of Central Kentucky, the Salvation Army Auxiliary, Cardinal Hill Hospital Auxiliary, the Kentucky Historical Society, and former director of Girl's State. She was a member of the PEO Chapter K, member of the Spindletop Hall, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. today at Carlisle Cemetery. W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

SEXTON, Melvin T., 75, of Marion, died Thursday, July 25, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday, Barnett's Funeral Chapel.

SHORT, Bertha Ellen, 94, of Raven, passed away Friday, July 26, 1996, following a long illness. Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Limeul and Margaret Lawson Palmer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Short; two daughters, Trula Short and Ethel White; one son, R. B. Short. Survivors include three daughters, Miss Effie Short of Raven, Mrs. Maudie Bronson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; six sons, Ballard (B. C.) Short of Roanoke, Walter Short of Belfast, Harold B. Short of Steelsburg, Otis Short of Madison Heights, Tommy Short of Richlands, Jason Short of Claypool Hill; one adopted daughter, Jean Thomas of Charleston, W.Va.; one half sister, Mrs. Elsie McGlothlin of Raven; 33 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 28, 1996, at the Singleton Funeral Chapel in Cedar Bluff at 2 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Ward, Rev. Jack Keene and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Dr. Michael Rowell. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 1996, at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.

VIA, James Edward, of Newport News, died Friday, July 26, 1996, in Mary Immaculate Hospital. He was a long-time Peninsula resident. Mr. Via was born in Schoolsville on July 22, 1910. He retired after 28 years with Coats & Clark, Newport News, where he was a supervisor. He was a Methodist. He is survived by his son, William Edward Via and his wife, Julie, of Martinsville; his daughter, Betty Lou Via Barbour and her husband, Clyde, of Ridgeway; his son, James Michael Via and his wife, Sue, of York County; his stepson, William D. Propst and his wife, Dorcel, of York County; his stepdaughter, Betty Jane Smith of Newport News; and his stepson, John F. Propst and his wife, Lucy, of Williamsburg; eleven grandchildren, Rachel Via, Martha Via, Jim Barbour, Stephanie Barbour, Melinda Lewis, Harold Smith, Debbie Smith, Laura P. Ogle, Steven Propst, Nancy Propst, and Tammy Via; and two great-grandsons, Tanner Barbour and John Ogle. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 28, 1996, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, July 29, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home by Rev. Bob Atkins. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
