The two women who plan to enroll in The Citadel next month likely will be roommates and treated like any other cadets, the chairman of the school's governing board said Saturday.
``We think it's important they have support from each other,'' Jimmy Jones said. ``Roommate support is critical.''
The board agreed at a private meeting Saturday that it would not require the women to wear the close-cropped haircut that male cadets must wear. Shannon Faulkner, who briefly became the first woman cadet last year, also was not required to wear the short haircut.
Originally, in a much publicized decision, the school had wanted Faulkner to get her hair cut. Later, officials changed their mind. Faulkner quit last year after a week, citing isolation and stress of the court fight.
The board reviewed the school's plan for admitting women that will be released this week when it is submitted to U.S. District Judge Weston Houck.
