Road work set
CHRISTIANSBURG - Road work on Virginia 8 in Montgomery County will begin on Wednesday. Workers will be overlaying both lanes and repairing the shoulders between Virginia 658 (Meadow Creek Road) and Interstate 81.
Only one lane of traffic will be open on Virginia 8 within the work zone. A pilot truck will escort traffic. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time to reach their destination.
The work will last about two weeks.

Volunteers needed
CHRISTIANSBURG - Volunteers and supplies are needed to help remodel Straight Street/180 Club's new building at 894 Radford St., Christianburg.
Volunteers will work on Aug. 10, between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to paint and clean. Volunteers who can help with light electrical and carpentry work are needed.
The club needs folding tables and chairs, a pool table, arcade games, an alarm system, stage lighting, a step ladder and a 40 gallon water heater. Building supplies needed include paint, lumber and wire.

FLOYD - The Blacksburg Community Band will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Skyline Manor Nursing Home on Virginia 681 in Floyd. The concert is free and open to the public.

Red Cross discussion
CHRISTIANSBURG - Shannon Lowe, an American Red Cross Pheresis Donor Representative, will be available to discuss a special blood donation process, plateletpheresis, on Tuesday from noon to 6 p.m. at the New River Valley Donor Center, 130 W. Jackson St., Blacksburg. Cancer, aplastic anemia and leukemia and the therapy used to treat the diseases tend to reduce a patient's ability to produce their own platelets. These patients require therapeutic transfusions of platelets to prolong their lives.

NAACP meeting
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery-Floyd County NAACP will meet today at 3:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Community Center on High Street. Donald Shoemaker, a professor in the Sociology Department at Virginia Tech, will speak on the criminal justice system with special emphasis on juvenile problems.
