BIKE OFFICER SUSPENDED AFTER SHOOTING HE INJURED MOTORIST WHO RAN OVER HIM

A bicycle patrol officer has been temporarily relieved of duty after shooting a motorist who had just driven over his legs, police say.

Alexy Abdo, a member of the Fairfax County police force for five years, is at home recuperating and will remain on leave pending an investigation, police spokesman Onzy Elam said.

The motorist, Nery O. Masis, 23, of Herndon, was charged with malicious wounding, driving while intoxicated, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license, Elam said.

Police said Abdo and another bicycle patrol officer, Darryl Stokley, were near Falls Church when they noticed a car being driven recklessly Wednesday night. They approached the car after it struck another vehicle.

But as the officers neared, the motorist drove off, police said. The driver ran over both of Abdo's legs, police said.

Abdo fired a single shot that struck Masis in the left arm. Masis was treated at Reston Hospital Center and taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was being held on $28,750 bond.

Police were reviewing the incident.

According to the department's written policy, shooting at a moving vehicle ``shall be avoided except to defend an officer's or citizen's life or protect them from serious physical injury.''
