Coal production up 18 percent
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production rose 18 percent to 19 million tons during the week ended July 20 from 16 million tons the previous week, the Department of Energy said Monday.
The U.S. coal industry produced 20 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.
Virginia mines produced 724,000 tons during the week of July 20, up from 563,000 tons a week earlier and from 721,000 tons a year earlier.
Domestic coal production so far this year is 555 million tons, 2 percent behind last year's production at this time.

Mail Boxes Etc. on Thursday will open its second Roanoke location, 3735 Franklin Road. It is owned by Richard Cecil, who also owns the Mail Boxes franchise on Electric Road. Mail Boxes Etc. provides mailbox rental service, package delivery, shipping and photocopying.
Environmental Directions Inc. has moved to new facilities at 2727 Plantation Road N.E. The company, formerly at 2900 Peters Creek Road, is a consulting firm and environmental laboratory established in 1991. The owner is Debra Oyler.
