Six inmates from the Pulaski Correctional Unit began working Monday in the town of Pulaski under the state's Community Work Project Program.
Their first jobs will be helping to renovate the bay area of the Pulaski Police Department, and clearing banks along Peak Creek of brush and debris. The nonviolent inmates will continue working in town for several weeks.
"Localities and state agencies which would otherwise be unable to complete public works project benefit from inmate labor, and inmates are given an opportunity to repay some of their debt to society," said Gov. George Allen in a news release announcing the Pulaski project.
Last year, Allen invited localities and state agencies in Virginia to participate in a program to put supervised groups of nonviolent offenders to work on public projects. Pulaski recently applied for the program.
