An unidentified man was found dead, face down in a Kirk Avenue parking lot Monday night.
Roanoke police said the man might have jumped or fallen from a parking garage on nearby Church Avenue.
A man on his way home from work about 10:30 p.m. noticed the victim in the parking lot and turned him over. The man had suffered severe head injuries.
The man had a pocket knife and $8 in his pocket, but no form of identification.
An autopsy will be performed once the man is identified.
Police also reported a purse snatching in Elmwood Park early Monday.
A 48-year-old Christiansburg woman told police she was lying on a park bench in front of the library about 4:41 a.m. She was using her purse as a pillow.
Police gave this account:
Two men walked by her on the sidewalk. The first man spoke to her, and the second man stepped forward, grabbed her purse and ran. The woman yelled after the man that her purse contained only $8.
The first man helped the woman look for her purse. They found her empty wallet behind the library.
The robber reappeared, shoved the man and hit the woman in the head with a rock. The man screamed that there wasn't enough money and ran off again.
A short time later, police stopped 20-year-old Calvin Edgar McFalls II on Williamson Road. Police said they found the woman's credit card and $8 in McFalls' pocket.
The woman identified McFalls as the man who took her purse. He was charged with assault and battery, petit larceny and theft of a credit card.
