Development in Northern Virginia threatens to overwhelm the Occoquan Reservoir and pollute the watershed's streams and rivers, environmental groups have warned in a report.
The report predicted that urban development surrounding the Occoquan Reservoir will more than double by 2020.
The reservoir is fed by streams and rainwater runoff from parts of Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun and Fauquier counties.
The Center for Watershed Protection conducted the study. It supplies drinking water to about 500,000 people.
At the same time, it said, demand for drinking water will almost double.
