Despite having to finish Wednesday's first round on Thursday morning, Whitten Meares of Fairbluff, N.C., fired a 71 in the first round followed by a 70 in the second to take a three-shot lead in the ClubCorp Junior Players Championship at The Homestead Resort's Lower Cascades course in Hot Springs.
Meares leads two Canadians, Michael Hospodar and Bryan McAlpine, heading into today's final round.(Scores in Scoreboard. B6)
Roanokers Brandon LaCroix and Jacob Jarrett had two-day totals of 158 and 159, respectively. Eric Hooke of Monterey is at 163 and Josh Points of Roanoke finished at 174.
Lee Taylor of Roanoke is fourth in the boys 13-14 division after shooting a second-round 74 to put his two-day total at 153. Tommy Branch of Vidalia, Ga., leads this division with a 142.
On the girls side, Wytheville's Joannah Pattison, who was tied for the lead after the first round, slipped in the second after shooting an 86. Her 164 leaves her four strokes behind leader Kelly Beth Simmons of Nicholasville, Ky., in fifth place.
Stephen Aukward, a blind tandem cyclist from Roanoke, has been named as a candidate for the Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia by the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes.
Aukward, 47, is trying to raise $1,000 to attend the Paralympics. The event will be held Aug.15-27. For more information, call the U.S.A.B.A. at (719) 630-0422.
Gray Hodges, a senior at Franklin County High School, is the recipient of the fifth Ray Bellamy Award by the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame. Hodges hit .377 with an on-base percentage of .553 during his final season with the Eagles.
Jennifer Kuziemski, an assistant coach at Meredith College for the past two years and a former player at North Carolina State University, has been named an assistant coach in the University of Virginia women's basketball program.
