SPEEDWAY TICKET CLOCK STARTS TICKING

Tickets for Martinsville Speedway's 1997 Goody's 500 and the Hanes 500 Winston Cup races go on sale at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 19.

The Goody's 500 will be held Sunday, April 20, 1997 and the Hanes 500 fires off on Sunday, Sept.28, 1997. Seats in the new Bill France Tower and the Goody's, Hanes, Winston, Richard Petty and Clay Earles towers will be $55 each. Chair seats are $45 and the concrete bleacher seats are $35 to $40 each.

Ticket windows open at 9 a.m. on August 19 and fans can purchase tickets by coming to the speedway, writing the speedway ticket office at P.O. Box 3311, Martinsville, Va. 24115, or by calling (540) 956-3151.

Good reserved tickets still are available for $35 to $40 for this year's Hanes 500 Winston Cup race to be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.22. Tickets are also still available for the Hanes 250 Truck Series race on Saturday, Sept.21.

In other sports news in the region:

The New River Valley Speedway opens its gates today at 1:30 p.m. for the Wades/Valley Rich 200, which kicks off at 8 in Radford.

Jeff Agnew is trying to hold off Tony McGuire in the Late Model Stock division while Tam Topham is trying to avoid the pressure of Jay McCray in the Limited, which returns from a week off.

In addition to the Pure Stocks and Mini Stocks, the Virginia Old Timer's Club will run. The Old Timer's Club features vintage race cars from the 1920s to 1960s in a 25-lap feature.

The Virginia contingent entered in the Biarritz Nations Cup golf play in France was the only team to qualify all four players for the final 36 holes of the tournament.

Tim Vigotsky of Centreville was the leading Virginian closeing with a 68-67 and a tie for seventh place (281). David Brogan of Lexington tied for 19th at 288.

Joannah Pattison of Wytheville finished in third place in the girls division of the ClubCorp Junior Players golf tournament at The Homestead resort in Hot Springs.

Pattison had a final round of 78 and a 54-hole aggregate of 242, five shots behind winner Sara Levin, of Lidtz, Pa.

In the boys 13-14 division, Lee Taylor of Roanoke finished in eighth place with a 241, 26 shots behind winner Tommy Branch, of Vidalia, Ga.

Brandon LaCroix of Roanoke was 14 shots off the winning pace in the boys 15-18 division, Jacob Jarrett of Roanoke was 18 shots behind and Josh Points of Roanoke was 33 shots behind winner Kevin Haefner, of Pittsford, N.Y., who won on the third hole of a playoff, defeating second-round leader Whitten Meares of Fairbluff, N.C.
