VIRGINIA BEACH LOOKING FOR BUSINESS

The Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development paid $50,000 for a one-time tourism ad in The Wall Street Journal's Eastern seaboard market, which extends from New England to Florida.

The full-page ad in last Monday's paper proclaimed Virginia Beach the ``Mid-Atlantic's number one vacation spot.''

Known for its beaches, climate and lifestyle, Virginia Beach ``is now attracting businesses as well as tourists,'' the ad said.

``Virginia Beach means business,'' said Virginia Malinsky, communications and planning manager at the Department of Economic Development.

The ad shows a photo of the beach and hotels and touts last year's arrival of Avis' processing center and Al-Anon's headquarters and the expansion of Lillian Vernon Corp.

The city's Department of Convention and Visitors Development bought ads in USA Today for the last four weekends in July. This weekend's series was intended to tie in with the Wall Street Journal ad.
