ABBOTT, James Donald, (``Jim""), 69, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 2, 1996. He was a life member of both the Loyal Order of Moose, Roanoke Lodge #284, and VFW Post #1264. Surviving are his wife, Wenonah Abbott; son, Gary Lee Abbott of Roanoke; daughter, Tena A. Harris of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Kristopher Abbott and Lee Abbott; stepmother, Vesta Jamison of Roanoke; brothers, Robert White of Aspen, Colo., Henry Robinson of Harbor City, Calif., Samuel White of Heartland, Wis., and James White of Rocky Mount; sisters, Patricia Chambers of Centreville and Marian Lewis of Hollins, and a very special companion, friend and her family, Patricia Harris. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, August 5, 1996, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. With burial to follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
ASHBY, Michael Rae, 49, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, August 3, 1996. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1966, and owner-operator of Ashby's Wrecker Service and Salvage in Roanoke. He was pred eceased by his father, John David Ashby. Survivors include two sons, Mark Timothy Ashby and his wife Wendy D. Ashby, and John Michael Ashby of Roanoke; one daughter, Sara Pauline Ashby of Roanoke; his mother and stepfather, Dollie Ashby Martin and Lester Hughes Martin of Yadkinville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Luke, Courtney, Matthew and Levi Ashby; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry David Ashby and wife Vickie Lynn Stafford Ashby of Roanoke, and one sister and brother-in-law, Victoria Ashby Jones and husband John R. Jones of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 5, 1996, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel. The Rev. Gene Burris will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. FREEMAN, David Franklin, 61, of Amelia, died Saturday, August 3, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Dreama Henderson Freeman, formerly of Salem; three sons and their wives, Duane G. and Theresa Freeman, Kent a nd Terry Freeman and Forrest S. Freeman; one daughter and her husband, Dineen F. and Michael Audet; his stepdaughter, Dawn Prillaman; his stepson and wife, Matthew and Amanda Cox; five brothers, John, Tommy, George, Seth and Fred; his sister, Agnes Singleton; an aunt, Doshie Norton, and two granddaughters, MaKenzie and Kimberly. Mr. Freeman was a life member of the Tomahawk Ruritan Club and a 25-year member of the Virginia Auctioneer Association. His remain rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Tomahawk Baptist Church. Interment will be in Amelia Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

GOODMAN, Bowie Clayton Jr., 70, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, August 1, 1996, in Marietta, Ga. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday from St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kanney, with burial in West End Cemetery, Wytheville. HALL, Catherine Lois Hillman, 68, of 510 Rudd Street, Burlington, N.C., died Saturday, August 3, 1996, at her home after several months of failing health. She was the wife of Richard Edward (``Dick"") Hall, and the daughter of the late William Walker Hillman and Mary Porter Hillman. She was a graduate of the Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke, Va., and retired after 20 years as a Registered Nurse with the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church, and The Seekers Sunday School Class, and was president of The Highland Homemakers Club. Funeral services will be conducted at Grove Park Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 1996, with Dr. Roy P. Taylor and Dr. Carlton E. Blankenship officiating. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hall is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John (Emily) D. Wells (Cobb) and Mrs. Jeffrey (Laura) T. Scott of Burlington, N.C.; two sons, Thomas D. Wells of Jackson, N.C., and Richard L. Hall of Mebane, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Drema Jennings of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Richard (Mala) Kessler of Roanoke, Va.; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Effie Hellas of North Tazewell, Va., and two brothers, Oval Hillman and Lloyd Hillman of Clintwood, Va. Mrs. Hall will remain at Lowe Funeral Home, 2205 South Church Street, Burlington, N.C., until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. HAWLEY, Lenna Jean, 68, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 2, 1996. She was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church, and was retired from Leggetts Tanglewood, following 17 years of service. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Susan Sexton, Allentown, Pa., Dean and Virginia Hawley, William Joseph Hawley, all of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Sarah Joan Hawley, Nicholas Chapma n Hawley; one sister, Doris Cooper, Roanoke; two nieces, Wanda Carpenter, Roanoke, Saunder Keller, Greensboro, N.C.; also, all of her close friends at Leggetts. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 1996, from Oakey's South Chapel. Pastor Rick Elmore will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. HUFFMAN, Helen Marie, 90, of Buena Vista, died Friday, August 2, 1996, in Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born on May 20, 1906, in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ella Camden Nease. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph D. Huffman. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn M. Huffman of Buena Vista; two sons, Cecil E. Huffman of Roanoke and Arthur R. Huffman of El Paso, Texas; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clelia Nuckols of Baltimore, Md., and Ruth Adams of Lynchburg, and many special friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 1996, at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. McALEXANDER, Elkanah Adison, 86, of Hillsville, formerly of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday morning in Baptist Hospital. For the past four years, he was a resident of Wheatland Retirement Center in Hillsville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the the Naval Bombardment during the invasion of Okinawa and Iwojima. He was a charter member of the Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club, with 44 years of service. He was a past master and member of Mt. H ome Masonic Lodge #263, a member of Meadows of Dan VFW Post #8497, and a member and former deacon of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. He retired with 42 years of service from the Virginia Department of Transportation as equipment maintenance supervisor. He was born in Patrick County on March 17, 1910, to the late John M. and Cora Williams McAlexander. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Yates McAlexander; a daughter, Jeanie Turman; a sister, Frela McAlexander, and a brother, Dennis McAlexander. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, J. Aaron and Glenda McAlexander of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Ms. Edna McAlexander of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Early McAlexander of Meadows of Dan and Joel McAlexander of Hillsville; two sisters, Fannie Thomas of Salem and Lucy Reynolds of Mt. Airy, N.C.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. McAlexander will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be given by Patrick County Memorial Honor Guard and Masonic rites by the Mt. Home Lodge #263. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

MILTON, Raypheal Phillip, Sr., 71, of the Wake Forest community, died Friday, August 2, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. He was born September 30, 1924, to the late Thomas and Bonnie Milton. He leaves to mourn Betty W. Milton of Blacksburg; son and fam ily, Raypheal Jr., Leigh Milton, and grandsons, Raypheal III and Maurice Milton, all of Pearisburg; brothers, Thomas C. and Louis Milton of Alexandria, Benjamin and Judith Milton of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Heartaese Eaves, Hazel and James Choats of Blacksburg, Janzella McCadden, Marion Price of Roanoke, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. NAFF, Wesley Washington, Jr., 62, of the Retreat area of Franklin County, died suddenly from a farming accident on his farm, Meadow Spring, on Friday, August 2, 1996. He was preceded in death by his father, W. W. Naff Sr., also of the Retreat area. Mr. Naff is survived by his mother, Ethel Willian Jamison Naff; his wife of 43 years, Angelia Hunt Naff; his children and their spouses, Wes Naff III and wife, Micky of Boones Mill, Dr. Bea Naff Bailey and husband, Rick of Pickens, S.C., Abe Naff and wife, Terri of Ferrum, Dr. Neal Naff of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Ellen Philpott and husband, Dr. Ben Philpott of Gray, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Jacob, Hunter, Lacey, Laurie, Mary Jessica and John Casey Naff and Emily Willian Philpott; his sisters, Rosemary Stevens of Hayesville, N.C., Rebecca Green of Retreat at Boones Mill, Betsy Davis of Radford, Virginia Dare Cooper of Charlotte, N.C., and Gretchen Naff of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday from Antioch Church of the Brethren, where he had been a lifetime member, with the Rev. Gerald Baile Crouse officiating. WALL, Maynard Arlington, 68, of Charlotte, N.C., died Thursday, August 1, 1996, at his home. He was born January 17, 1928, in Radford, Va., a son of the late Thomas Arlington Wall and Irene Stafford Saunders Wall. Mr. Wall was the retired owner of Maynard's Home Improvement. He graduated from Radford High School in Radford, Va., and attended Milligan College in Milligan, Tenn. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Midwood Baptist Church and Sharon Golf Club. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 5, 1996, at the Harry and Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Ernest Richards of Providence Baptist Church, Hickory, N.C., officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at Harry and Bryant. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Merlene King Wall; two daughters, Pat Hensley and her husband, Ray, of Newton, N.C., and Anne Sibley and her husband, Robert, of Matthews, N.C.; a sister, Monica Bruce and her husband, Byron, of Pulaski, Va.; a brother, Tommy Wall and his wife, Helen, of Shreveport, La., and four grandchildren, Jennifer Sjaardema of Newton, N.C., and Lisa, Amy and Andrew Sibley of Matthews, N.C.
