Spelling bee

BLACKSBURG - The Rotary Club of Montgomery County will sponsor their annual New River Valley Corporate Spelling Bee on Friday, September 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Custom Catering in Blacksburg. The Spelling Bee will coincide with National Literacy Month and will help raise funds for local literacy and other Rotary-sponsored projects. The entry fee is $200 per three-person team.

The previous three Spelling Bees enabled the club to donate more than $5,000 to the local affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America. This year's goal is a contribution of $3,000. LVA provides free, confidential, and one-on-one training to adults who want to learn to read, or to speak English as their second language. More than 200 New River Valley adults are paired with LVA tutors to improve their literacy skills.

Sponsors are needed for teams. Call Chip Worley at 552-5592 or Linda Deemer at 552-4201 if your organization is interested in sponsoring a team or can make a contribution for the event.

Volunteer honored

PULASKI - Ruth Nuckols, a long-time volunteer and supporter of the Fine Arts Center for New River Valley, has been named an honorary lifetime member of its board.

"Ms. Nuckols' dedication to the center has remained strong since the beginning days of the organization," said center Director Michael Dowell. "She is a volunteer's volunteer."

She served as president of the center's Docent Guild for 10 of its 18 years. Nuckols has also been active in work with Girl Scouts and the town of Pulaski's beautification committee.
