NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

Floyd A. Beams of Blacksburg was one of four educators in Virginia who were the 1996 recipients of the Virginia Society for Certified Public Accountants' Distinguished Career in Accounting Education Award. Beams retired from the accounting department at Virginia Tech in 1995. He wrote an accounting textbook used nationally by colleges and universities and was active in developing the school's undergraduate and Master of Accountancy programs.

Melody Yuvanavattana of Christiansburg was presented with the JC Penney Golden Rule Award in May. The 12-year-old middle school student who volunteered for six months at Christiansburg Primary School in Mary Ann Pearson's kindergarten class. The award is given to groups and individuals who perform outstanding volunteer service in their communities.

John Hosner of Blacksburg, former director of the school of forestry and wildlife resources at Virginia Tech, was recognized in May at the 55th Southern Forestry Conference and Annual Meeting of the Forest Landowners Association in New Orleans. Hosner was named forest landowner of the year for 1996 for a lifetime of commitment and service to southern forestry and the Forest Landowners Association. The association is based in Georgia.

At the same meeting, Harry Haney Jr. of Blacksburg was elected as a board member of the association.

The Coalition for Community has presented awards to individuals who contributed to the organization's vision to "build community amidst diversity." Awards were presented to Danya Conn of Blacksburg for her anti-hate holocaust programs; John and Nan Hairston of Christiansburg for their race-relations work through the NAACP; Baldwin Lloyd of Blacksburg for his initiatives with Native American people and communities; and Ben Crawford of Blacksburg for his contributions to rural community development as a Ruritan leader.

Jenny May of Radford was the first runner-up of the local contest for the "True Value/Jimmy Dean Country Showdown," held July 2 in Radford's Bisset Park. The second runner-up was Dara Elaine Cupp of Christiansburg. Clint Paxton and Country Thunder of Roanoke won the local competition for the national country music talent search with prizes totaling $150,000 annually.

In June, Ann Gardner, a Blacksburg Cadette Girl Scout, attended Canoe Country Rendezvous sponsored by Northern Lakes Girl Scout Council in Hibbing, Minn. Thirty-six girls participated in the canoe trip in the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada. Gardner is a member of Cadette Girl Scout Troup No. 262 and she was chosen from a pool of 250 applicants for her initiative and leadership skills.

Joanna VanDyke, a junior at Pulaski County High School and daughter of Sherrill and Barbara VanDyke of Radford, was one of 100 girls from 38 states selected to attend "Press Pass!" The Girl Scout Wider Opportunity event was held at Olivet Nazarene University, in Bourbonnais, Ill., in June. "Press Pass!" offers study in print journalism, photo journalism, broadcasting and television.

VanDyke is a member of the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council and has been active in the Girl Scouts for 10 years.

Jennifer Smith of Dublin, daughter of Joe Smith of Erlanger, Ky., and Robert and Tina Martin of Dublin, competed in July in the Miss Teen of America Contest in San Diego, Calif.

Candidates are judged on the basis of achievement and service to schools and community, personal development of talents and skills, general awareness as determined by a written test, scholastic record and overall personality.

In July, the Community Foundation of the New River Valley elected four new members to their board of directors and re-elected three members for a three-year term. New board members are: Lawrence Bowman of Christiansburg; Richard Ely of Dublin; Gerald Fain of Draper; and Robert Miller of Christiansburg. Re-elected members are John Cosby, Floyd; Robert Stuart, Blacksburg; and Lindsay West, Blacksburg. The foundation is a nonprofit organization that administers endowed funds for the benefit of donors and the community and makes grants from these funds. Re-elected officers are: Lindsay West, president; William Dawson, Vice President; Ben Crawford, secretary; and Donald Michelsen, treasurer.

The Virginia Dietetic Association recognized Iva Mary Hopkins of Blacksburg as the 1996 Virginia Distinguished Dietitian. The award is for her achievements, contributions to the community and her interest and promotion of the Virginia Dietetic Asssociation.

Montgomery County 4-Hers participated in the annual 4-H State Congress at Virginia Tech in June. The Consumerama I team, Lauren Mason, Carrie Mason and Andrea Kirk, all of Blacksburg, took first place.

First-place winners were: Lauren Mason, Blacksburg, Consumerama; Brian Bunn, Brandon Bunn, Josh Reedy and Robbie Tuell, all of Riner, variety band and singing; Clay Rogers, Christiansburg, electronics/computers; Lori McKinnen, Christiansburg, beef ambassador program; Katherine Halberstadt, Christiansburg, personal appearance; and Amanda Southerland, Blacksburg, public speaking.

Second-place winners were: Abigail Green, Riner, vocal; Shannon Mast, Blacksburg, drama.

India Bennett of Mount Tabor placed third in health.

Local participants in the 17th Annual Roanoke City Art Show, held in July, were: Steven Bickley, Gloria M.K. Heath, Mary Irwin Moore, Nancy Bagato, all of Blacksburg; Edward LeShock, Husny Dahlan, M. Ann Fariello, Susan V. Lockwood, all of Radford; Jean Nelson and Aileen Fletcher, both of Christiansburg.

Courtney Frances Smith of Radford was selected as a state finalist in the 1996 Miss American Pre-Teen Pageant to be held in Richmond in August.

Smith, 9, the daughter of David Smith of Radford, is a rising 4th grader at McHarg Elementary School.
