Four students from Christiansburg High recently attended the 1996 Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project Conference at Longwood College. Traci Barr, Jennifer Clark, Eric Beasley and John West are Teens Need Teens peer counselors at the school. They were accompanied by their sponsor Regina Meredith. Another Christiansburg student, junior Jay Clark, attended the conference as a student leader. This was his third YADAPP conference.
The Christiansburg students received the 1996 Wheeler Award, which recognizes significant accomplishments of high school student organizations that promote and sponsor activities and programs that encourage a drug-free lifestyle. TNT submitted its scrapbook documenting drug and alcohol and tobacco awareness projects. The Christiansburg group received $1,000 which it will use for projects during the school year.
The students submitted several written reports for the award, including a history of the organization, issues and concerns the group addresses at school and in the community and a description of the school and community-wide activities the students used to achieve their plan.
Robert S. Emmett, a junior at Blacksburg High School, attended the Governor's French Academy in July at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton. The monthlong program provides students the opportunity to use French for all communications purposes. The program is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.
Emmett is a third-year French student at the high school. In the past two years, he has served as secretary and vice president of the French Club. He will be president of the French Honor Society as a senior.
Rasheq Rahman, who graduated from Blacksburg High School in June, received the Senior French Award. The award recognizes the senior who has excelled in French.
Rahman took four years of French. He was a three-year member of the French Club, and as a senior he served as president of the National French Honor Society. Rahman also scored well on the National French Exam as a senior, placing 13th in Virginia and 18th in the nation in the French Level IV A Division.
Rahman will attend the University of Chicago in the fall, where he will major in economics. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Saifur Rahman of Blacksburg.
Suzanne Rae Barnes, a sophomore at Christiansburg High School, will compete for the title of Miss Teen of Virginia, Aug. 22-24 in Richmond.
