Ag fair in Newport

NEWPORT - Virginia's oldest agricultural fair is hitting Newport again on Friday and Saturday. The 61st annual fair begins at 4 p.m. Friday and will feature events such as a pet show, beauty pageant and a draft horse pull. The evening will end with gospel music at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the fair opens at 9 a.m. with a horse show and there will be games such as wheelbarrow, sack and three-legged races throughout the day. A jousting tournament will be held at 5 p.m. and the night will end with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Anyone can participate in the shows and tournaments. Beauty pageant contestants, however, must be from Newport. There will be cash prizes for the first and second winners of all games and shows.

On Friday, the admission is 50 cents for children 12 and under and $1 for adults. Admission on Saturday will be 75 cents and $1.50, respectively.
