A man who had been fired from a garden supply store stole a truck from the business Monday and led state troopers on a chase that damaged two cruisers.
Tony Vandevander, 19, of Fredericksburg was charged with car theft, state police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said.
Vandevander was treated for a cut at a hospital after his arrest.
Caldwell said Vandevander stole a truck from Roxbury Farm and Garden Center in Fredericksburg about 6 a.m. He had been fired over the weekend, police said.
State Trooper Jeff Flanary saw it parked beside Virginia 208 and went to assist what he thought was a disabled motorist.
Vandevander pulled a knife and moved toward the trooper, who fired pepper spray but missed, Caldwell said. Vandevander sped off with Flanary in pursuit.
Near the entrance to a subdivision, the truck struck Flanary's cruiser and another. He was arrested there.
