After six years of selling only compact cars, Saturn is growing up.
General Motors Corp.'s directors Monday approved a midsize sedan for its small-car subsidiary, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The new car, based on the German-made Opel Vectra, is to go on sale in mid-1999. Saturn employees are expected to get details of the program today.
The long-rumored Project Innovate expands Saturn outside its Spring Hill, Tenn., complex and into a traditional GM assembly plant.
It secures the future of GM's assembly plant in Wilmington, Del., which had faced closing.
