SENIORS TO ROCK THE DAY AWAY

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will have its third annual rock-a-thon Friday. Volunteer members will rock the day away from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Montgomery County Courthouse lawn in Christiansburg. The rock-a-thon will kick off at 8 a.m. with a bake sale.

This is the program's largest fund-raising event of the year. Local businesses sponsor the marathon chair-rockers by making donations. Money raised from the event will go toward two scholarships for students in health care. Proceeds will also be used to hold holiday receptions for residents at area adult and nursing homes. Call 382-5775 to sponsor RSVP volunteers while they rock.

In the past, RSVP members have volunteered more than 54,000 hours. Last year, RSVP of Montgomery County won the 1995 Governor's Award for Volunteerism Excellence.

The local RSVP program was started in 1973 and serves Montgomery County and Radford. There are more than 250 senior volunteers serving at 34 community work stations. Volunteers participate in a variety of activities, including yard sales, bake sales, quilting, meetings, outings and trips. In addition, volunteers support community programs such as Telecare, Self Help and Resource Exchange, Humane Society and the Christmas Store. They also support schools, adult homes and community events.
