BOLLING DOTS HOME COURSE WITH BEST SHOTS

Dot Bolling's run for a record sixth Roanoke Valley Women's Golf Association title is off to a flying start.

Bolling fired a 2-over-par 74 in Tuesday's first round at Hidden Valley Country Club to take a four-shot lead on the field in the 54-hole tournament. (Results in Scoreboard.)

Playing on her home course, Bolling strung back-to-back nines of 1-over 37 despite not recording a single birdie.

Nancy Shuck was the only other competitor in the 41-player field to break 80, shooting 78.

Marilyn Bussey, who captured back-to-back City-Countys in 1989-90, opened with an 80. Valeta Pittman, coming off a strong showing in the recent State Amateur, also had an 80.

Three players are tied for fourth at 83: Bonita Howell, Brenda Harvey and former Hall of Fame champion Kathy Hull.

Hidden Valley leads the team standings with an overall score of 334. Blue Hills is second in the running for the Fran McCorkindale Trophy at 341. Hidden Valley also leads the pack for the Evelyn Anderton Trophy at 394. But Roanoke Country Club is right there, too, at 395.

Today's second round will be played at Ole Monterey. The tournament wraps up Thursday at Botetourt Country Club.

LEE-VING ON A JET PLANE: Lee Shirley of Salem's second trip to the U.S. Women's Amateur was a short one.

Shirley, a 20-year old junior at the University of North Carolina, fired her second consecutive 7-over-par 79 Tuesday at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb., and fell short of qualifying for today's start of match play. Only the low 64 finishers in 36-hole medal-play qualifying make match play.

Arizona State's Kellee Booth shot an even-par 71 to share medalist honors with Korean-born teen-agers Jenny Lee (Austin, Texas) and Grace Park (Phoenix). Each qualified with scores of 1-under 141. Shirley shot 158 over two days.

STATE JUNIOR BOYS: Roanoke's Chris Pugh, playing in the 14-15 age bracket, is among the overall leaders after one round of the 44th State Junior Amateur Championship in Farmington. (Results in Scoreboard.)

Pugh shot an even-par 72 and is tied for third place in the tournament held at Birdwood Golf Club, just outside of Charlottesville. Kevin Miller of Virginia Beach shot a 67 and leads second place Michael Gooden of Staunton by four strokes. Martinsville's Chris Clark carded a 74 and Roanoker Brandon LaCroix was one of seven golfers who shot 75s.

Other locals included Roanoke's Ryan Patterson (76) and Bassett's Chad Young (78). Defending champion Cameron Yancey, of Blackstone, shot a 72.

Ryan Sypniewski of Radford shot a 35 to lead the 11-under age bracket, which competed over nine holes at Farmington Country Club.

STATE JUNIOR GIRLS: Wytheville's Joannah Pattison struggled to a first-round 12-over-par 84 and finds herself well off the pace heading into today's final round of the VSGA Junior Girls' Championship in Chesapeake.

Pattison, last year's winner and the VSGA's 1995 Junior Girls' player of the year, trails leader Mandy Beamer of Crewe by five shots.
