The North Roanoke All-Stars, fresh off winning the state 12-and-under girls' softball state title, will compete in the Dixie Ponytail World Series that starts Friday in Aiken, S.C.
North Roanoke, coached by Mike Walthall, enters the 12-team tournament with a 15-0 record. North Roanoke swept through the recent state tournament in Salem, outscoring its five opponents by a combined score of 37-8.
Walthall's club has been carried by a pitching staff that has permitted three earned runs all season, including one in the state tournament. North Roanoke is no slouch offensively, either, averaging seven runs per game in the state tournament. North Roanoke, which finished seventh in the nationals three years ago, faces last year's national champion from Louisiana in its Friday tournament opener.
The double-elimination World Series, which runs through next Thursday, includes champions from 12 southern states.
