The Rev. Glen McCrickard has become pastor of Cloverdale Church of the Brethren succeeding the Rev. Steve Van Houten, who went to an Ohio church last year. McCrickard has come from the Ivy Farms Church of the Brethren in Newport News. He and his wife, Nancy, have a son, Matthew.

The Rev. Joseph Crowther has ended a five-year pastorate at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the North Lakes neighborhood. He has been chosen pastor of a North Myrtle Beach, S.C., congregation.

The Rev. Jimmie Jennings, pastor of Temple Baptist Church of Salem for nearly 25 years, has been honored for his service there with a 12-day trip to Israel, Greece and Egypt, the traditional "Bible lands." He will take the tour beginning Oct. 22.

David E. Vanderpool, a graduate of Salem High School and Southern Wesleyan University, has been ordained to the ministry of the Wesleyan Church. He is assistant pastor for youth and music at Penn Forest Wesleyan Church. He is married to Beth Smith Vanderpool, and is a son of Ron and Susie Vanderpool of Salem.

Jon Johnson, organist at Williamson Road Church of the Brethren throughout his high school years, will leave the staff Sunday and will be honored then with a noon reception. Johnson is entering East Carolina School of Music.

The Rev. J. Stuart Kelly, formerly pastor of a Brethren in Christ congregation in Dublin and more recently at a church in Chambersburg, Pa., has been chosen interim pastor of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren. He began a year's service on Sunday. |MUSICAL EVENTS| Botetourt Weekday Religious Education, an ecumenical program for elementary schoolchildren conducted as a private ministry in several communities, will benefit from a Labor of Love concert Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. It will be at Trinity United Methodist Church in Buchanan and will feature Harvestime and the Coburn Family.

Vincent Doty, contemporary Christian musician, will be featured Aug. 16 at the Praise Cafe, a smoke-free, alcohol-free youth lounge at the Sheraton Inn. He will perform at 7 p.m. following an optional dinner available from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There is a cover charge of $3 for adults not buying the buffet meal.

The Shockoe Male Chorus of Chatham will perform Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. at Truevine Church, 1132 Loudon Ave. N.W.

A Brethren Gospel Fest featuring Evelyn Conner, the Gospel Tones, Wings of Faith, The Inspirations, Altar of Prayer and The Victors is scheduled Aug. 24 from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Camp Bethel in Botetourt County. Cost is $2 per car for the music; an additional offering will benefit the work of the conference center. A barbecue chicken dinner will be available at an additional cost. Morning Star Baptist Church, 1513 Rorer Ave. S.W., has scheduled its 15th Annual Family Singing Jubilee Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. |VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS| Fellowship Baptist Church, 929 Murray Ave. S.E., plans activities based on a theme of "Kingdom of the Son." Sessions will be Sunday through Aug. 17 evenings from 6:30 to 8:45. Call 344-6322 to register.

Lighthouse Christian Ministries, 2222 Wildwood Road, Salem, concludes its vacation Bible school Friday. "Seaside With the Savior" is the theme. It is open to children 2 through 15 evenings from 7 to 9. Call 387-3723. |OUTREACH| Unity of Roanoke Valley, under the leadership of Sharri Russell, recently shipped 800 pounds of children's clothing to Romania for use in institutions for the many orphans there. Members donated not only the 40 boxes of garments, but also funds to ship them. The project is an outgrowth of an international conference at which Roanoke Valley Unity member Florence Hetz discovered the need from a Romanian pastor .

Bethel Baptist Church in Salem sent a team of 18 adults and youths to the Schuylkill Valley Baptist Church in Spring City, Pa. The work mission from July 27 to Aug. 2 included leadership of a vacation Bible school and renovation of homes of needy people. |SPECIAL EVENTS| The Rev. Wilfred Mayton Jr., pastor of Woodlawn United Methodist Church a decade ago, will return there Aug. 18 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the parish. He will preach at the 11 a.m. service. Mayton is now superintendent of the Eastern Shore District of the Virginia United Methodist Conference.

Woman's Day will be observed Sunday at First Church of God in Christ in Buchanan. Leading worship at 3 p.m. will be the Rev. Margaret L. Bass, pastor of the Glorious Church of God in Christ No.2 in Roanoke.

An Al-Islamic study group has been started by members of Masjid An-Nur, a Muslim congregation that meets at 2227 Clifton Ave., N.W. It meets each Wednesday from 8 to 9 p.m. Topics are taken from the Koran and the Sunnah. Call 985-0139 for more information.

The 25th anniversary of Unity of Roanoke Valley will be marked with a dinner Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Patrick Henry Hotel. Returning from Florida for the celebration will be the Revs. Alan and Kathryn Rowbotham, who served as co-pastors of the congregation for much of its history. The 70th anniversary of Oakland Baptist Church being observed Sunday will include special music at 9:30 a.m. by former minister of music the Rev. Judy Barger, a buffet lunch, additional fellowship time with former staff at 2 p.m. and a watermelon feast at 3 p.m.

St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1201 Hardy Road in Vinton, will emphasize the reduced-cost food program, SHARE, on Aug. 24. The church, which works with the Vinton Woman's Club, will honor the 42 volunteers who bring the food from the Pulaski warehouse and sort it for those who participate in the program.
