VMI LOADS UP ON '96-'97 HOOP HEAVIES

An early-season visit from North Carolina and two nationally televised dates highlight VMI's 1996-97 basketball schedule.

The Tar Heels visit Cameron Hall at 4:30 p.m. Dec.15. They are the first ACC team to come to Cameron Hall since Virginia visited during the 1984-85 season.

In addition to a full Southern Conference slate, the Keydets also entertain Navy on Dec.5 and Washington and Lee on Dec.7. VMI's schedule also includes trips to Wake Forest, UNC Charlotte, Richmond, Radford and Florida International. (Complete schedule in Scoreboard.)

Individual game, package and season tickets are available by calling (540) 464-7266. Ticket orders for the North Carolina game will be filled on a priority bases, with season tickets first, then partial plans, then single game orders. Season ticket holders may buy no more than six tickets per order for the UNC game. All seats for the game are $15.

VMI's date with North Carolina will be shown live on Prime Network, while the Tennessee-Chattanooga game on Jan.11 will be shown live on ESPN2.

In other sports in the region:

K.J. Hippensteel defeated Steven Moros 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 at the U.S. Tennis Association 18-and-under national championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Wednesday. The Roanoker will take on Simone Amorico of Delray Beach, Calif., in a quarterfinal today.

Addams England of Roanoke and Jill Archer of Salem made strong runs in their respective divisions at the state 18-and-under outdoor tennis championships in Newport News.

England reached the boys' final before falling to Craig Rice of Suffolk 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday. England defeated Nick Serfass of Richmond 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a quarterfinal and routed David Rauschberg of Richmond 6-4, 6-1 in a semifinal.

Archer beat Michele Martin of Lynchburg 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in a quarterfinal Tuesday before falling to Elizabeth Gay of Lynchburg 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a semifinal Wednesday.

The Legends cars will be gunning for a $500 purse Saturday night in their final scheduled appearance of the 1996 season at New River Valley Speedway.

Clay Hair of Charlotte, N.C., who won the last Legends race at NRVS on July 6, is planning to contend for the money.

The gates open at 1:30 p.m. for the Pepsi 200 and practice gets under way at 3:30. Qualifying for the evening's feature begins at 6 and the opening division rolls out of the pits at 8.

Double points will be awarded in all divisions Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway in the Nelson Pontiac-GMC 300. Rain checks will be honored because the Aug. 3 card was rained out.
