ADKINS, Debra Hurt, 33, of Vinton, died Wednesday, August 7, 1996, in a local hospital. Surviving are her parents, Andrew and Virginia Hurt; sons, Brandon Adkins, James Moore II, all of Vinton; brothers, Billy Mullins, David Waldron, both of Roanoke; special friend and former husband, Anthony Adkins; fiance, James Moore; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, and many friends. Special thanks to the fifth floor ICU nurses & doctors at Community Hospital. Graveside ser vices will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 1996 at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens with Pastor Chester Lykins officiating. AUSTIN, Dora Jane Stoots, 88, of Dublin, formerly of Austinville, died Wednesday, August 7, 1996, in Millstadt, Ill. She was born in Carroll County, Va., the daughter of the late Leonard and Lula Ga llimore Stoots. She was a member of the Sheeptown Church of God and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry C. Austin. She is survived by four daughters, Golda Boland of Millstadt, Ill., Merita Lindner, Bonnie Loiseau both of Belleville, Ill., Trula Alderman of Dublin; one sister, Clara Cook of Rt. 2, Austinville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 1996 at the Sheeptown Church of God with the Rev. Thomas Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery, Poplar Camp, Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family will receive friends at the Reese Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. BAGWELL, Era Nettie, 88, of the Smyth County Community, Marion, died Tuesday, August 6, 1996. She was a lifelong teacher in public schools in Alexandria, Va. before retiring in Marion. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Graybeal and Miss Effie Lou Bagwell. She is survived by one brother -in-law, Fred Q. Graybeal of Marion; nephews, Fred Q. Graybeal Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas and Robert T. Graybeal of Sarasota, Fla. and several other nieces and nephews of Georgia; a special friend, Drema K. Rhea of Saltville. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 1996 at the Marion Baptist Church with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Lawn Cemetery. GREENE, Ivan R., Sr., 72, died Thursday, August 8, 1996, at his residence, 650 Orange Street, Bedford. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie S. Greene of Bedford; one daughter, Geraldine E. HORTON, James E., (``Jim''), 58, of Dublin, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 1996, in Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Spartanburg, S.C. He was born October 22, 1937 in Carroll County. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by his parents, Sid and Vida Horton; a brother, Ivan Horton; and a sister, Betty Jean Jennings. Surviving are his wife, Pauline (Polly) Horton; daughter and son-in-law, Kym and Matt Allen, Dublin; sons, J. D. JARVINEN, Willard B., (``Bill''), 76, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday eve ning, August 7, 1996, at his home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was retired as a senior design engineer, serving 37 years with General Electric. After retiring he volunteered with several civic organizations. Mr. Jarvinen was an active member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Marcella Jarvinen of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and Glenn Kraige of Blacksburg; two grandchildren, Stephanie and David Kraige, Blacksburg; brother and sister-in-law, James and Dorothy Jarvinen, St. Paul, Minn.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Norma Halverson, Riverside, Calif. A memorial service will be held at South Roanoke United Methodist Church 2 p.m. Sunday with Dr. M. Douglas Newman officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the South Roanoke United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or the Carilion Hospice. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Oakey's South Chapel.

JOHNSON, Philip A., a resident of Bedford and previous long-time resident of Glen Rock, N.J., died Wednesday, August 7, 1996, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 75. Known as Phil, he was born to D. W. and Cleo Johnson in St. Ignatius, Mont., on November 13, 1920. He graduated from Mission High School in 1938. He then joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent 31/2 years on the battleship USS South Dakota. He was a veteran of World War II and served in all major battles of the Pacific, including Guadalcanal, Midway Island, Tarawa, Okinawa and Wake Island. In 1946, he joined the Iron Workers Union, Local 361, in New York City. His career spanned almost four decades with work on some of the most famous structures of the New York City skyline like the Tappan Zee Bridge and the World Trade Center. He worked to provide his family with a secure home as well as promising futures. He was an avid gardener and became famous for his Jersey tomatoes. He retired in June of 1983. He and his wife retired to Bedford in October of 1985. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 45, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a parishioner of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Bedford. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Evelyn G. Johnson of Bedford; three children: a son, William P. of Hawthorne, N.J., and two daughters, Elizabeth A. of Santa Fe, N.M., and Alice E. Quinlan, husband Terrance O., and belov ed grandchild, Patrick Ryan Quinlan, all of Las Cruces, N.M. He is also survived by five siblings: four brothers, Max, David, Emery and Charles, and one sister, Delores Lake. Visitation will begin Friday, August 9, where friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Oakwood Street, Bedford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jim Begley on Saturday, August 10, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church at 11 a.m., followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Parkinson's Association located in Lynchburg. Arrangements are by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

JOHNSON, Rev. James Thomas, (``Slim''), 76, of Roanoke, formerly of Rockbridge County, died Thursday, August 8, 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. Born in Rockbridge County January 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas Burtram Johnson and Mollie Ann Wood Johnson. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Salem. Rev. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Kathleen Johnson. Surviving are one son, James C. Johnson, Laurinburg, N.C., two daughters, Patsy L. Standifer, Roanoke, Shelia J. Barger, Salem; one sister, Doris Campbell, Lexington; also seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 10, 1996, at 3 p.m. from the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jill Crainshaw and Rev. R. Stuart Carlton officiating. Burial will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. LYONS, Joan Hensler, 57, of Salem, died Wednesday, August 7, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was a native of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and a Salem resident for the past 19 years. She was employed with the Roanoke County Social Services Department for 14 years as a supervisor. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Salem and was active in the Stardusters square dance club. Survivors include her husband, John D. Lyons; a son, Kevin Lyons of Falls Church; daughters and sons-in-law, Kristy and David Mattingly of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Kerry and Rob Abrams of Richmond; granddaughters, Mary Catherine and Laura Michelle Mattingly; a brother, Richard Hensler of Utica, Mich., and a sister, Irene Macnamara of Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 12, 1996, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Salem, with Father Gregory Kandt officiating. PEDIGO, Mabel Boley McGhee, 89, of Salem, died Thursday, August 8, 1996, at Richfield Nursing Home. She was the widow of Eugene B. Pedigo. A native of Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Calvin M. and Rosa M. Boley. She was a Salem resident for many years. She attended National Business College and was retired from Stuart-McGuire, where she was a bookkeeper for 33 years. Mrs. Pedigo was a lifetime member of Salem Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class, and was very active in the Salem Senior Citizens Club and the 49ers Club. She was preceded in death by a brother, Allen J. Boley. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Rosa Jobe Boley of Salem; two nieces, Shirley Boley Stephenson of Roanoke and Rosemary Boley Pura of Henderson, Nev.; two nephews, Allen C. Boley of Salem and James J. Boley of Charleston, W.Va.; three stepsons, Earl B. Pedigo and William T. Pedigo of Roanoke and Robert D. Pedigo of Moneta, and one stepdaughter, Jean Nelson of Springfield. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 10, from the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem by the Rev. STRAUSS, John Andrew, Sr., (``Pappy''), 84, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, August 6, 1996, in Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital. Born May 7, 1912, in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Frank Edward and Margaret Pearl Whitten Strauss. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margine Thomas Strauss; two sisters, Louise S. Black and Pauline S. Swain; one brother, James Walter Strauss. He was a retired electrician with IBEW #637, Roanoke. He was a member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Surviving are two sons, John A. Strauss Jr., Dunellen, N.J., Thomas Wayne Strauss, Yokohama, Japan; one daughter, Jean Strauss, Rolfe, Iowa; three grandchildren, Ryan, Shannon and Hans Strauss; two sisters, Irene Strauss and Margaret Strauss, both of Pulaski; and a special friend, Ima Wallace, Pulaski. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kim Goddard and Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. STUTLER, Mildred E., (``Millie''), 63, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 1996, at Friendship Manor. She was the widow of Robert E. Stutler Jr. and was a former employee of Davis Pizza Shop in Salem. She is survived by her children, Linda S. Halverson, Vinton, John E. Stutler, Blacksburg; grandchildren, Sherry Lynn Craighead, Salem, Pvt. Cindy D. Raynor, Fort Lee, Va., Robert Stutler and Bobby Stutler, Roanoke; grea t-grandchildren, Joshua Raynor and Whitney Ann Raynor; three brothers, Cecil E. Payne, Allen H. Payne and Kenneth E. WALSHE, Mary Myers, 90, of San Marcos, Calif., died Sunday, August 4, 1996 at her home. She was born October 10, 1905 in Gala, Va. She t aught elementary school in Buchanan and Fincastle before her marriage to Blayney T. Walshe in 1936. She lived in Ventnor, N.J. for fifty-two years, where she taught elementary school for fourteen years. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Atlantic City, N.J., and later at Christ Episcopal Church in Somers Point, N.J. She moved to California to be near her grandchildren following her husband's death in 1984. She is survived by her daughters, Jane McCracken of Carlsbad, Calif. and Anne Walshe of West Nyack, N.Y.; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Myers Wade of Grenada, Miss. and Evelyn Myers Besley of Mineral, Va. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 5th in Carlbad, Calif. A graveside service and burial will be at the Walshe Family plot in Godwin Cemetery, Fincastle, Va. on Saturday, August 10, 1996 at 2:30 p.m.
