Patricio Claudio went 3-for-3 and scored three runs Friday night to propel the Kinston Indians to a 7-0 victory over the Salem Avalanche in a Carolina League baseball game.
Noe Najera (10-2) and reliever Tony Dougherty combined to limit the Avalanche to four hits.
Claudio, the Indians' fleet center fielder, was the catalyst. He singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning, stole second and scored on an infield grounder by Harry Berrios. Claudio generated another run in the third inning when he walked, stole second and scored on a single by Raymond Harvey. And Claudio was in the middle of a three-run uprising in the sixth inning that sealed the victory for Kinston. He doubled to knock in a run and scored on a single by Chip Glass.
Berrios hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Najera and Dougherty did the rest, combining to strike out nine Avalanche batters. Dougherty earned his fourth save by pitching 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
Salem pitcher Luther Hackman (5-6), architect of a no-hitter in his previous outing, was touched for six earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one.
The loss was Salem's fourth in a row. Matt Pool (4-6) will pitch for the Avalanche tonight against Jaret Wright (4-4) of Kinston.
