LARRY STOWERS has been named plant manager of the Long-Airdox mining equipment and manufacturing facility in Saltville. Stowers, who is now manager of the Rural Retreat plant, will retain his responsibilities there in addition to the management of the Saltville plant.
Stowers began his career in the mining industry in 1969 when he joined Long-Airdox as a machinist. Since then, he has held various positions with the Oak Hill, W.Va.-based company, including foreman at the former Oak Hill manufacturing site and manager of the Pearisburg plant.

JOHN WELLS GILLON has been appointed director of development and JULIE A. NURSE has been named director of development operations at Roanoke College. Gillon comes to the college from Wake Forest University's Babcock School of Management, where he was director of alumni and development. Nurse was director of development at Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge Inc. before her appointment at Roanoke College.

ELIZABETH ANNE BOWER has opened Management Consulting Specialists Inc., a Roanoke health care consulting company offering management, management consulting and other services to medical practices, hospitals and companies associated with the medical field.

JIM RUEL has been promoted to assistant marketing and sales manager of Cox Communications in Roanoke. Ruel joined Cox in 1994 as customer service supervisor. MELANIE SLAUGHTER has been promoted to skills development specialist for the company. She was employed by Cox in 1995 as an account executive for CableRep Advertising, a subsidiary of the company. CHRIS GOERNER has joined Cox Communications as customer service supervisor. He formerly was a sales manager and quality service adviser for NationsBank of Virginia.

MELEANI HUFFMAN has joined ExecuTrain as administrative assistant and marketing coordinator for the Roanoke office. She previously worked for Fralin and Waldron Inc.

STROUD, president of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce, has been named president of the board of directors of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executive for a one-year term. BARBARA H. RING, executive director of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, was appointed vice president-programs. HARVEY SHEPHARD, executive director of the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce, was reappointed to the board for a three-year term.

N. LARRY ROACH of Henry County, owner of Larry Roach Real Estate Inc., has been appointed by Gov. George Allen to the board of directors of the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority. CURTIS G. ALYSSA G. "ALY" GOODWIN has been appointed manager of public relations at The Greenbrier resort hotel in White Sulphur Springs. Prior to joining The Greenbrier, Goodwin was deputy finance director for the campaign of Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. She has also worked on the Washington staffs of Rep. Bob Wise, D-W.Va., and Rockefeller.

RICHARD D. LUCAS has become a member of the Roanoke law firm Carter, Brown & Osborne. Lucas has practiced law in Roanoke since 1982 and formerly was a principal in the firm of Woods, Rogers and Hazlegrove, where he was chairman of the tort litigation and workers compensation subsections of the firm's litigation department.
Roanoke lawyer JOHN C. JOHNSON has been appointed to a three-year term on the Virginia State Bar's standing committee on lawyer discipline. Johnson practices with the law firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore.

ROBERT W. LOVELL has been promoted to management information manager at Martinsville-based Nationwide Homes. He will be responsible for computer applications development and technical support throughout the company. Lovell formerly was manager of the Martinsville region of the consumer division of Nationwide Homes. Lovell has held a variety of sales and management positions since he joined the company in 1974.

KIMBERLY P. BUCHANAN, former Seattle/San Francisco district manager for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed sales director for Leisure Publishing, whose publications include Blue Ridge Country and The Roanoker magazines.
