UNHERALDED HEROES THEY WORK BEHIND THE SCENES TO MAKE OUR LIVES WORK BETTER

They're the unheralded heroes of the Roanoke Valley.

They serve you a cheeseburger with a smile; they bring hope, encouragement and nutrition information to pregnant teen-agers; they put in long hours to make sure the playground where our children play is user-friendly.

We asked our readers to nominate those people around the Roanoke Valley whom they thought worthy of recognition, but who rarely, if ever, receive any - people who work behind the scenes to make our lives a little easier.

The folks featured in this section were nominated by their neighbors, their co-workers, their friends. Some of them have overcome personal tragedy; others just do their jobs every day without fanfare. Either way, the unheralded heroes make our Roanoke Valley a better place to live.
