Many Roanoke Valley localities and community groups are responding to the increasing concern about the environment and landfill alternatives by sponsoring recycling programs.
Several areas have curbside pickup of recyclable materials. Pickup is available in the following localities:
Roanoke: Provides curbside pickup of recyclable materials to 23,000 residents on a voluntary basis. The program will be expanded in 1997 to include the remaining residential customers serviced by the city.
Curbside collection is every other week on regular trash collection day. Residents may refer to Roanoke City recycling curbside collection calendar for dates.
Accepts newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, plastic drink bottles and glass, food and beverage containers.
Thirty two-gallon roll-out carts are provided to single-family homes, and 18-gallon bins are provided for duplexes and apartments.
Roanoke city also collects Christmas trees and bulk items. Christmas trees are collected during the month of January at the curb, not in alleys. Look for an ad in The Roanoke Times or call dispatch at 981-2225 for specific dates. Bulk brush is collected year round. Residents must call dispatch to schedule a collection date. For information on collection of other bulk items such as, couches, refrigerators and stoves call dispatch.

Roanoke County: Provides curbside pickup of materials for recycling to 3,700 homes.
Unseparated-materials pickup is provided for the neighborhoods of North Lakes, Willow Creek, Montgomery Village, Crofton and Lindenwood.
Source-separated materials collection is provided for the neighborhoods of Castle Rock and Fort Lewis. Christmas trees are collected during a one week period after the first of the year. Call 387-6225 for exact dates of christmas tree collection.

Vinton: Has a mandatory curbside recycling program for all single-family homes. Residents of apartment buildings that do not have private recycling dumpsters may receive a free bin that can be placed at the curb on regular pick-up days. Accepts aluminum and steel cans, clear and green plastic bottles, milk jugs, flattened cardboard boxes and all paper products including magazines. Residents are asked to separate recyclables with brown paper bags only.
Christmas trees and other cuttings can be picked up at curbside to be chipped. Mulch is available at the old landfill across from the public works building on Third Street. Call 983-0646 for information on curbside pickup of these items.

Bedford: Has a mandatory curbside recycling program for all single-family residences. Accepts newspapers, glass, aluminum and bi-metal cans, plastic milk jugs and soft drink bottles. Christmas tree curbside pickup is usually one to two weeks after New Year's day, call public works at 586-7181 for specific dates. Brush collected at curbside once a month, call public works for dates. Mulch can be picked up and loaded at landfill for free.

Botetourt County: Some curbside pickup available through licensed private haulers. Call Kurt Hodgen, public works director, 473-8316 for more information.
For residents of areas where curbside recycling is not yet available, various drop-off points are open to receive newspapers, mixed paper, glass, aluminum, mixed metal, plastic and other recyclable items.
Following is a list of several of these locations, with hours of operation and the items they accept:
Roanoke Valley
Advance Auto: Seven Roanoke Valley locations. Open seven days a week. Accepts used automotive batteries and motor oil.
Browning Ferris Industries: 341 24th St. N.W. Open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Accepts aluminum cans, newspaper, mixed paper, cardboard and glass.
Community Recycling Station: 2580 Broadway St. S.W. (off Interstate 581 at Wonju Street). Open daily, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Accepts glass (beverage or food only), aluminum, scrap metal, newspaper, cardboard, mixed paper and plastic containers (PETE and clear HDPE).
Kroger: Lake Drive Plaza, Cave Spring Corners, Crossroads Mall. Open 24 hours. Accepts glass, cans, newspaper and plastic containers (PETE and HDPE). Kroger plastic bags may be recycled in bins inside all Kroger stores.
Roanoke Valley Resource Authority: Tinker Creek Transfer Station, 1020 Hollins Road (near Orange Avenue and Hollins Road). Open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Drop-off containers for glass, newspapers and aluminum cans. Mulch loaded free Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Tires accepted for a fee. White goods disposed of for free with Roanoke city or Roanoke County car decals. Salem Transfer Station: 1300 Indiana St. Accepts cardboard, aluminum, glass (separated by color), newspaper, scrap metal, bi-metal cans and plastics (PETE and HDPE).
Bedford
Bedford Recycling Center: City Landfill. Open daily. Accepts newspapers, mixed paper, glass (separated by color), beverage cans (aluminum and bi-metal) and plastic milk jugs and soft drink bottles.
Bedford also operates a mobile recycling unit at various locations.
Bedford County
All of the following Bedford County 24-hour drop-off centers accept dry, newspaper and inserts, rinsed steel or aluminum cans, rinsed brown, green or clear glass, and clean plastic (soft drink or milk bottles only).
All Bedford County residents should drop off Christmas trees at the Waste Management Facility site at Virginia 43.
Big Island: Beneath old Big Island school at intersection of Virginia 604 and 776.
Centerville: Virginia 122 and 644.
Chamblissburg: Virginia 755, off Virginia 24.
Forest: dump site on Virginia 221.
Moneta: Moneta Fire Station, Virginia 122.
Montvale: U.S. 460, next to Butterfield's.
Smith Mountain Lake: State Park dump site on Virginia 626.
Non-community drop-sites Landfill on Virginia 714 and the Waste Management Facility on Virginia 43.

Botetourt County
County Landfill: Virginia 779. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. Accepts mixed paper, aluminum, glass, tires and appliances (PETE and HDPE).
Schools: Breckinridge, Buchanan, Cloverdale, Colonial, Eagle Rock and Troutville elementary schools; James River and Lord Botetourt high schools. Accepts mixed paper, aluminum, glass and plastics (PETE and HDPE) 24 hours a day.
Craig County
A drop-off center for newspaper, glass, scrap metal, aluminum and tin cans is at the county landfill. Open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Franklin County
Franklin County has seven 24-hour drop-off points for household recyclable items within the county. For information, call John Crook, landfill supervisor, at 489-1600.
Recyclables accepted at these sites include newspapers, unified beverage cans, glass food and beverage containers (separated by color) and all types of plastics. Additionally, the county landfill site located on U.S. 220 can accept such items as cardboard, motor oil, large appliances and tires.
The locations are: Scruggs, Virginia 616; Blackwater River, U.S. 220; county landfill, U.S. 220; Burnt Chimney, Virginia 670; Glade Hill, Virginia 718; Ferrum, Virginia 40 and Fork Mountain, U.S. 220.
Landfill hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday and holidays, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Purchase of recyclables
Blue Ridge Beverage: 4446 Barley Drive, Salem. Open Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-noon. Buys aluminum cans. 380-2000.
Cycle Systems: 2580 Broadway St. S.W. Open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Drop-off hours daily, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Buys aluminum, scrap metal, newspaper and cardboard. 981-1211.
Hedge Metal Co.: 610 Ninth St., Salem. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. Buys aluminum and scrap metal. 389-0766.
Reynolds Aluminum: Five locations are available to buy aluminum, copper and brass. They are: 102 Boulevard S.W. Roanoke, open Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Family Dollar Store, 2201 Dale Ave. S.E. Roanoke, open Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; AH Auto Sales, 1961 W. Main St., Salem, open Wednesday and Friday, 2-5 p.m.; Rocky Mount Plaza, Pell Ave. Rocky Mount, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 2-5 p.m.; Wal-mart, U.S. 460 in Bedford, Tuesday-Saturday, 2-5 p.m.
