CLASSES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS CONTINUING EDUCATION

Continuing education in Roanoke Valley schools and colleges offers entry into a variety of fields. Below is a listing of some of the available programs:

Hollins College - Horizon Program: Adult studies baccalaureate degree program designed for any woman who has been out of formal education for four or more years, or who is more than 25 years old and does not hold a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. - Master of Arts in Liberal Studies: Open to both men and women. Concentrations in humanities, computer studies, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies. Classes held at convenient hours for working adults. Other graduate programs include English and creative writing, psychology, master of arts in teaching, and a summer only program in children's literature. Also offesr a summer program for young women who are rising juniors and seniors in high school to help make the transition to college more easily. For lectures information, call 362-6451. Roanoke City Schools: Courses run September through May in business, trades/industrial and marketing programs. Certification in secretarial and some trade/industrial programs is available. Certificates of completion in nonaccredited courses. Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) program offered for those who did not receive high school diplomas. Cost is $25, but instructional preparatory classes are free. Learning to read and pre-GED classes are free. English as a second language for foreign-born adults. Roanoke County Schools: A sampling of the more than 100 courses offered includes: a complete line of computer courses such as Wordperfect 6.1, all types of management- and supervisory-level training, courses in electronics, electricity, masonry, carpentry, catering, cake-making, upholstering, sewing and nursing assistant training. Certificates of completion offered in nonaccredited courses. GED program, SAT preparation and English as a second language courses are available. Virginia Western Community College: Courses offered on credit and noncredit basis, including off-campus locations. Many classes can be applied to degree programs at Virginia Western and four-year institutions. There is a special focus on training programs to upgrade employee skills in business, health care and industry. Certificate courses offered in short-term, technical skills, training and noncredit courses for personal enrichment offered days, evenings and weekends.
