Following is a partial list of the private and public swimming pools in the Roanoke area:
Public pools
Fallon Park: Belle Avenue Southeast, 981-2206, and Washington Park: Burrell Street Northwest, 981-2369. Both pools are open Sunday-Thursday noon-6 p.m., Friday-Saturday noon-8 p.m. Family night, adult and senior lap swimming the last hour of every day. Admission is $1 for ages 5-15; $2 for 16 and older; children 5 and younger get in free. A pass containing 10 admission tickets is $8 for ages 5-15 and $16 for ages 16 and over.
Gator Aquatic Center:1130 Overland Road, 982-7665. Open Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Private and group lessons available. Call for membership information.
Vinton Swimming Pool: Washington Avenue, Vinton, 983-0644. Pool open Monday-Saturday noon to 5:45 p.m., Sunday 12:00-5:45 p.m. Single membership is $55 per adult $45 per child. Membership for a family of three is $105, with $25 for each additional member. Senior citizen membership is $30. Daily membership for senior citizens is $1.50, adults $2.00, children under 16 $1.50, and children under 4 get in free. Lessons are available in three different 10-day sessions at $25 per session.
Private pools
Aqua Net Swim and Racquet Club: Finney Drive, Vinton, 890-8099. Junior Olympic-size pool. Open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Sunday 1-7:30 p.m.; open several times a month for late swim until 10.00 p.m. Membership is $220 per couple, $10 per child and $15 for a baby sitter. Single membership is $135. There is a one-time initiation fee of $50 for new members only. Local guests are admitted for $4.25; out-of-town guests (outside of a 50-mile radius) no charge.
Brookcliff Swim Club: U.S. 221, Roanoke, 774-9810. Open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.; Sunday 1-7 p.m. Single membership is $90; family membership is $185. Guests with members are charged $3 on weekdays, $4 on weekends and holidays.
Bush Valley Swim Club: Hardy Road, Vinton, 890-9864. Open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday 1-7 p.m. Member-owned; membership shares cost $300, including purchase of stock. After that, cost is $220 per family plus $15 per child age 5 and older. Summer memberships are available at $220 plus $15 for each child older than 5.
Carter Athletic Center: 4254 Colonial Ave. S.W., 989-7284. Open Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Call for membership Information.
Castle Rock Swim Club: Burnham and Brahma roads, 772-1977. Near Sugar Loaf Mountain. Open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-8 p.m. Yearly membership fee $235 per couple and $15 for each child the first year, and $260 the second year. Initiation fee $100 for new members. Guests with a member are charged $4.00, $5.00 on weekends.
Countryside: Countryside Road Northwest, 366-9727. Open Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday 1-8 p.m. Family swim every other Friday and Saturday 8-10 p.m. Yearly membership dues are $150 per single, $250 per family, plus a $75 initiation fee for new members. Call for details on family membership fees.
Elks Lodge Pool: 1147 Persinger Road S.W., 344-6140. Open Tuesday 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.-8 p.m., closed Monday. Must be member of the lodge or invited guest.
Forest Hills Swim Club: Kenwick Trail, Roanoke County, 989-1854. Open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday 1-8 p.m.; Membership fee is $235 per couple and $15 for each child over 2.
Hidden Valley Country Club: 2500 Romar Road, Salem, 389-6603. Open Monday-Sunday 9 a.m.-8 p.m. For membership information call the club.
Hollow Creek Swim Club: 217 Hershberger Road, 366-7665. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday and Monday 1-8 p.m. Family membership is $170 plus a $60 initiation fee. Single membership is $110 plus a $30 initiation fee. Senior Citizens can receive a 10 percent discount. Lessons available.
Hunting Hills Country Club: 5220 Hunting Hills Drive S.W., 774-9800. Open Tuesday 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.- 8 p.m.; closed Mondays, except holidays. For membership information call club manager's office, 774-4427.
Lake Drive Swim Club: Niagara Road, Vinton, 982-9759. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday 1-7:30 p.m. $40 initiation fee plus $180 per couple and $10 for each child; single membership is $95 plus an initiation fee. Lessons available for members.
LancerLot Family Fitness Center: 1110 Vinyard Road, Vinton, 981-0205. Open Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Family membership $145 initiation fee and $61 per month; single membership $125 initiation fee and $40 per month. Senior citizen, student, corporate, fire, rescue and police membership rates also available. Call for membership specials. Swim lessons available.
Montclair Pool: 2820 Byron Drive, 562-1868. Open Sunday-Monday 1 p.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Single membership $110; family memberships range from $165-$175; each additional child $10. Initiation fee $65. Swim lessons available.
North Lakes Swim Club: 5321 Greentree Lane, Roanoke County, 562-9811. Open Tuesday-Saturday 11 am.-8 p.m., Sunday and Monday 1-8 p.m. Membership is $165 per family plus a $60 initiation fee.
Olympic Park Swim Club: 3136 Harris Ave. S.W., Roanoke County, 774-9990. Open Monday-Saturday 11 am.-8 p.m. and Sunday noon-8 p.m. Call for membership information. Guests with members are charged $3.15 per person Monday through Friday, $4.20 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Read Mountain Swim Club: Downing Street, Cloverdale, 992-9456. Tinkerview Swim and Recreation Club Inc.: 1965 Catawba Road, Daleville, 992-4583. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.-7 p.m. Open til 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Family membership $295; single $185. No initiation fee. Swim lessons available. Also has a swim team. Call for more information.
YMCA Central: Church Avenue and Fifth Street Southwest, 342-9622. Hours vary with season. Pool open Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday 1-6 p.m. Classes meet daily, for infants up to adults; water aerobics also available. Call for daily lap swim, family swim and open swim hours. Membership fee for individual is $75 initiation and $32 per month ($459 per year); men's health center membership is $100 initiation and $42 per month (604 per year); family membership is $100 initiation and $47 per month ($664 per year); family membership with health center is $125 initiation and $56 per month ($797 per year); youth membership is $40 annually.
YWCA of Roanoke Valley: Central Center, 605 First St. S.W., 345-9922. Central Center open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday 2-5 p.m.. Adult membership (18-59) is $50 per year; kids membership (6-17) is $10 per year; senior membership (60 and over) is $40 per year; family membership is $60 with a limit of 5 members, and $70 with 6 or more members. Open lap swim is $40 per month, or $5 per visit.
Botetourt County

Bedford County
