BOOTH, Phillip Wayne, Jr., 24, of Deerfield, died Saturday, August 10,1996 at the Augusta Medical Center. He was born June 19, 1972 in Staunton, Va. to Phillip Wayne Booth, Sr. and Shirley Lotts Booth. He was employed at Dodge Distributing Corp. of Verona, a 1991 graduate of Bath Co. High School, attended The Rehobeth Methodist Church and the Green Valley Church. He was baptized at the Bethel Tabernacle in Fisherville, Va. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Wanda M. Wymer, McDowell, Brothers, Clay E. Booth, Guy S. Booth, both of Deerfield, Larry W. Booth, Staunton, William R. Booth, David L. Booth, both of Churchville; grandmother, Lila Seale, Staunton; grandfather, Jess E. Lotts, Stuarts Draft; several aunts and uncles; three nieces and six nephews. Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996 at McLaughlin Funeral Home, Hot Springs, Va., with the Rev. Billy Gram officiating. Burial in Rehobeth Church Cemetery, Greenvalley, Bath Co. BROOKS, Robert G., 82, of 136 Glendale Avenue, Norfolk, died Saturday, August 10, 1996. He retired fr om the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in 1972 as an engineering technician. Born in Blacksburg, he was a descendant of Zackariah Price and the widower of Dorothy R. Brooks. He was a member of Park Place United Methodist Church; a 32 Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Shrine Khedive Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S.; and a founding member of Glenwood Park Civic Club. He is survived by one daughter, Genevieve B. Seguinot and her husband Mark of Fairfax; one son, Robert G. Brooks Jr. and his wife Pamela of Virginia Beach; one sister, Willie Girsch of Norfolk; three granddaughters, Genevieve R. Price of Fairfax and Kelly M. Brooks and Meredith C. Brooks of Virginia Beach, and three grandsons, Charles C. Russell of Raleigh, N.C., and Chris Seguinot and Michael Seguinot of Fairfax. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996, in Forest Lawn Cemetery. CARTER, Mary Jane Copenhaver, 75, of Marion, died Thursday, August 8, 1996 in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee. A native of Marion, Va., she is survived by two sons, Charles Scherer Carter, Jr. of Princeton, WV and Frank Cameron Carter of Wormleysburg, PA; one grandson, Charles Cameron Carter of P rinceton, WV. DOWNEY, Joseph Ezra, Jr., (``Joe''), 70, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, July 18, 1996 in a Roanoke Hospital. Private graveside services were held in Clifton Forge.
GALLIMORE, Dale Whittington, 71, of Willis, passed over Friday, August 9, 1996 at his home. A radio personality and entertainer, he was known to many by his radio character ``Farmer Dale"". Mr. Gallimore was a broadcaster for over fifty years, working in many of the radio stations in the region. He founded WHHV radio station in Hillsville and radio station WGFC in Floyd. He was a past commander of the Grover King V.F.W. Post in Hillsville. Survivors include his wife, Marie Vaughn Gallimore, of the home; two sons, Anthony V. (Tony) Gallimore, Gerald W. Gallimore, both of Willis; one brother, Gray W. Gallimore, Manasquan, N.J. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd, with the Rev. Clyde Earles, the Rev. Graham Mitchell and the Rev. Bryan Childress officiating. Burial will be in the Vaughn-Hylton Cemetery, Willis, with military honors by Grover King V.F.W. Post #1115. HALE, WILLIAM E., (``Red""), 75, of Roanoke, died Thursday, August 8, 1996 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was a very loving father and grandfather. Mr. Hale was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, a retired real estate broker, general contractor and land developer for over 40 years. He was past president of the Williamson Road Kiwanas Club and past Lt. Governor of the Capital District of Kiwanas. He was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Shrine Temple and a long-time member of the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie D. Hale, daughter, Pamela Ann Nungesser, and grandson, John W. Nungesser. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bill Minix, Ft. Worth, Texas; grandson and wife, Brian and Kathleen Minix of Manassas; two granddaughters, Tracey Schaberg and Patricia Ann Minix; great-grandson, Zachery, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Betty Wilkerson of Vinton and Nancy Richards of Roanoke. Graveside services will be held in Fair View Cemetery 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Dr. Darryl G. Crim officiating. Masonic rites will be held by Williamson Road Masonic Lodge. HANCOCK, Ruby A. Morris, 96, of Salem, passed away Friday, August 9, 1996. She was born in Amherst County to the late William H. and Emma Brown Arnold. She was the founder of First Church of Jesus, now known as Burning Bush Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Hancock Sr. Survivors include one loving brother, Jessie Arnold, New York; one loving and devoted son, Frank Morris, Arizona; two loving daughters, Helen Jackson and Rosalyn H. Goodman, both of Salem; two stepdaughters, Mary I. Covington, North Carolina, and Ann Ford, Elliston; one stepson, John T. Hancock Jr., Salem; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; six great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, noon, at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Elder James Moore and Bishop Coleman will officiate with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Friends may also call Hamlar-Curtis on Tuesday for viewing.
HATCHELL, Randall Odell, 37, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Saturday, August 10,1996 in Roanoke County. He is survived by one daughter, Amanda Gail Hatchell; his mother, Ellen Hatchell, Christiansburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd B., Jr. and Rebecca Hatchell, Radford; one nephew, Justin Hatchell; one niece, Cindy Hatchell. Stuart served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam, received an Associate's Degree from Ferrum College and graduated from King College with a Bachelor's Degree in history. He was a marketing specialist for Triple S Marketing. Surviving are his sons, Jay Hurd of Roanoke and David R. Hurd of Charlotte, N.C. HURLEY, Donald C., 75, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 9, 1996 in a local hospital. Mr. Hurley retired in 1984 as an Engineer with General Electric with over 37 years of service. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, graduating in 1958. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot in World War II, and was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Irene D. Hurley, Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald C., Jr. and Teresa Hurley, Carmel, Ind., Kevin J. and Marian Hurley, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Kent Boerner, Richmond; five grandchildren, Michael and Patrick Hurley, Emma and Ellen Hurley and Alec Boerner; three brothers, Ted Hurley, Richard Hurley and Robert Hurley; two sisters, Mary Tebo and Rita Hurley. A funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Kenneth Stofft officiating. KENNEDY, Tommy Wayne Sr., 53, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 1996, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a truck driver for Goodwill Industries. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Lee Kennedy; two sons, Tommy Wayne Kennedy Jr., High Point, N.C., John Edward Kennedy, Salem; one daughter, Lisa Holt, Vinton; one half brother, Ronnie Neal Hall, Roanoke; two sisters, Marguerite Harvey, North Carolina, Nancy Hall, Roanoke; also seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was born in Bland County, the son of the late Jessie H. and Hettie Gillespie Umbarger and was preceded in death by a sister, Glarus Wimmer. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Coffey Umbarger, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and James Blankenship, Dublin; five sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Umbarger of Waynesboro, Lewis and Phyllis Umbarger, Ceres, John and Mary Lou Umbarger, Clifton, Ray Umbarger, Ceres, Allen and Judy Umbarger, Churchville. Thirteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 12, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Ceres, with the Rev. Frank Lyerly and the Rev. Bill Schoeneman officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
