UVA, TECH WELCOME NEWCOMERS

Virginia begins its preparations for the 1996 football season with the arrival today of 28 freshmen.

That number includes scholarship players and invited walk-ons. The Cavaliers signed 20 players in February, although wide receiver Kevin Coffey, from East Cleveland, Ohio, will not practice until he receives clearance from the NCAA.

The walk-ons include Brian Cordyack, a quarterback from South Lakes High School in Reston who was rated one of the top 25 prospects in the state after his junior year.

The newcomers will have academic orientation Monday, followed by medical examinations. Workouts for the freshmen will be held before upperclassmen begin practice Friday.

nFootball newcomers reported to the Virginia Tech campus Saturday for the first of four days of conditioning and orientation.

The freshmen held their first conditioning workout Saturday night and will have more drills today and Monday. Academic orientation is Tuesday, when the upperclassmen also are scheduled to report. Wednesday is media day, and full-squad practice begins Thursday.

Brandy Bailey and Kari Arnold each had two RBI and Christie Gauldin hit two doubles as the North Roanoke Ponytail All-Stars defeated Louisiana 6-0 in a first-round game at the Dixie World Series. Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter and struck out 11. North Roanoke will take on Tennessee today.
