CELEBRATIONS - ANNIVERSARIES

Belcher anniversary

W. Harold and Geneva S. Belcher celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 27, 1996. The celebration was held at Vinton War Memorial, and was hosted by their children. They were married on July 27, 1946 in Troutville, Va., and have been life long residents of Botetourt County. She is the former Geneva Scaggs, and is retired from Botetourt County School System. Mr. Belcher is retired from Veterans Medical Center in Salem. They have three children, Sharon Stultz of Roanoke, Sandra Thomas of Troutville, and Barry Belcher of Fincastle.

Flinchum anniversary

Over 100 people from around the country assembled in Christiansburg's VFW Hall on July 27th to celebrate the 50 years of marriage for James and Nora Flinchum of Riner. Originally married after World War II in Radford on July 25, 1946, they spent most of their married years in Virginia Beach, before retiring to Riner and returning home in 1985.

Guests from as far away as Nevada, Minnesota, Illinois, Georgia and Florida, as well as family, friends and neighbors, enjoyed the band of Ken Epperly, the catering of Doris Kitts and the old-fashioned friendliness of Mr. and Mrs. Flinchum. Guest speaker, Phyllis Randall entertained the guests. Their son, Jim Flinchum of Williamsburg, paid tribute to his parents and their accomplishment, saying ``Their marriage is both a memory of another time and a beacon of hope for the future.''

Mrs. Flinchum is the former Nora Ethel James of Riner. Although retired from distinguished careers in the Federal Government, they are currently active with the VFW Post 1115, Oddfellows Lodge #20 and Indian Valley Presbyterian Church.

Fuller anniversary

W. David and Lena Fuller celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married August 12, 1946, in Roanoke, Va.

Mr. and Mrs. Fuller have one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Norman Altizer. They have one grandson, Eric Altizer.

Mrs. Fuller, a homemaker, is the former Lena Sue Simpson. Mr. Fuller is employed by Belmont United Methodist Church. they are long time members of the Parkway Wesleyan Church.

Shaver anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Shaver celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary August 10, at an open house with family and friends in Floyd.

The couple was married August 10, 1946, in Copper Hill. They have two children, Jim Shaver and Mrs. Sharon Wood. They have one granddaughter, Shannon Wood; and three grandsons, Jim Shaver, Jr., Ben Shaver and Bryan Wood.

Clifford is retired from General Electric company in Salem. Mrs. Shaver, the former Malicia Hollins, is a nurse in Roanoke and Floyd.

Sutphin anniversary

Opal and Rachel Sutphin celebrated their 60th anniversary by repeating their wedding vows in a ceremony held at Lynn Haven Baptist Church, Vinton, Va. on Saturday, August 10, 1996. Mrs. Sutphin was the former Rachel Stanley of Vinton and Bedford County. The ceremony was attended by their children and spouses, Rusty and Janice Sutphin of Charlotte, N.C., Sue and Josh Morimato of Sterling, Va., Jan Britton of Dover, Del., and Stuart and Wanda Sutphin of Chatham, Va.

Following the ceremony a reception was hosted by their children.

The couple have six grandchildren, Sara Sutphin and Suzanne Stehr of Houston, Texas, James Patrick of Sterling, Va., Laura Fainter of Oakton, Va., and Lindsey and Andrew Sutphin of Chatham, Va.
