CANNADAY, Pauline Bowles, 59, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, August 11, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center. Born on June 12, 1937, the daughter of the late Paul A. and Effie Cooper Bowles, she was preceded in death by a brother, Larry R. Bowles. A devoted wife, loving mother and special friend, she is survived by her husband, James T. Cannaday of the home; two daughters, Kelly J. Cannaday of Ferrum and Joan M. Cannaday of Reston; son and daughter-in-law, James T. (Jim) and Lisa W. Cannaday Jr. of Leesburg; grandson, James Thomas Cannaday III of Leesburg; four brothers, twin brother Paul Wayne Bowles of Morristown, Tenn., L. Douglas Bowles of Knoxville, Tenn., Kenneth W. Bowles of Stewartsville and Arthur L. (Sandy) Bowles of Roanoke; four sisters, Stella Francis Johnson of Roanoke, Florence Hughes of Bay City, Texas, Willie Mae Holland of Forrest City, N.C., and Bonnie L. Angel of Boones Mill; special friends, Debbie Meeks, Delores Anderson, Betty Cannaday and Gladys Wade, all of Rocky Mount; several aunts, nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at Franklin Memorial Park, with the Rev. Arnold Terry officiating. Friends may call at Lynch Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Monday, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Center of Southwest Virginia. CHITTUM, Georgie Edgar, (``Pot""), 73, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, August 10, 1996, at his home. He was born November 15, 1923, in Rockbridge County, son of the late George Chittum and Bertie McCollough Chittum. He was retired from Burlington Industries after 42 years of service. Mr. Chittum was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post #126. He attended the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Ogden Chittum; one son , Timothy L. Chittum and wife Cathy S. Chittum of Buena Vista; a daughter, Kimberly Mae Chittum of Lexington; a brother, Robert Chittum of Glasgow; a sister and brother-in-law Annie and Johnny Guyan of Newport News; his mother-in-law, Annie Ogden of Buena Vista; three grandchildren, Justin Lee Chittum, April Michelle Chittum and Jeremy Garrett, and a special friend, Kenneth Wayne Shafer of Buena Vista. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. David Bain officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice.

CLARK, Helen K., 84, of Roanoke, died Sunday, August 11, 1996. She is the widow of Joseph W. Clark and was preceded in death by her son, Jody Clark. She was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia G. Clark; three sisters, Nell Gray of Waco, Texas, Josephine Wimmer of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lu cy Robertson of Roanoke; one brother, George Martin of Charlotte, N.C., and a nephew, Ralph Wimmer of North Port, Ala. Graveside services will be held in Evergreen Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996. Dr. Alton M. Washington and the Rev. Walter M. Lockett Jr. will officiate. EPPERLY, Mildred Huff, 69, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 11, 1996. She was retired after 38 years of dedicated and faithful service from the Kroger Company merchandising department, and was an active member of Melrose Avenue United Methodist Church. She was a beloved wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Willard H. Epperly; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda E. and James L. Kitchens, and one granddaughter, Elaine A. Kitchens, all of Athens, Ga.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Joy Huff, David and Lorine Huff and Curtis and Brenda Huff, all of Floyd; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Barry Sweeney of Floyd; one niece, Deanna Sowers of Floyd, and eight nephews, Eric Huff, Dennis Huff, Jody Harris and Jamie Sweeney, all of Floyd, Ray Huff of Roanoke, Jerry Huff and Wendell Huff of Christiansburg and Anthony Huff of Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, at the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. C. Warner Crumb and the Rev. Edward Taylor officiating. SUMPTER, Virgie M., 100, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 10, 1996, at her home. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Floyd. For most of her adult years, she was an active participant in Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Dorcas Bible Class and the W.M.U. She was also a member of the Greenwood Road Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shelburne Sumpter. Surviving are daughters, Jane Sumpter Hall and husband, Harry, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Janice Sumpter Humphreys of Roanoke, and a granddaughter, Sandra Humphreys Alexa and husband, Drew, of Colorado Springs, Colo. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Donna Hopkins and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating.
