DAVID NIED turns in a strong pitching performance as Salem stops its five-game losing streak.
David Nied allowed three hits in 7 2/3 innings as Salem stopped its five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Kinston Indians in a Carolina League game on Sunday.
Nied (1-1) allowed one earned run, walked three and struck out nine. At one time, he retired 17 in a row.
Salem opened its scoring in the top of the first when Elvis Pena led off the game with a single and eventually was driven in by Blake Barthol.
The Avalanche added two more runs in the fourth inning. Chad Gambill started the inning with a single. Pookie Jones then attempted a sacrifice bunt but the ball was mishandled by the Kinston pitcher to put Avalanche runners on first and second with no outs. After Mike Higgins hit a sacrifice to advance Gambill and Jones to second and third, Link Jarrett singled home Gambill. Chan Mayber then hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Jones.
Kinston's lone run came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Chip Glass singled home Gerad Cawhorn.
The Avalanche will play a doubleheader today at Lynchburg then return home where they will play nine games in 10 days. Salem's Mike Vavrek (8-6, 5-10 ERA) will take on Lynchburg's Jason Phillips (4-5, 6.08) in today's first game.
