TESTIMONY: ATTACK CAME IN DARKENED DORM STAIRWELL

A Radford University student said an assailant held a dormitory door open for her moments before he slammed her head into the floor and tried to pull her pants down, according to testimony Monday in Radford General District Court.

During a preliminary hearing, General District Judge John Quigley certified charges of attempted rape and malicious wounding against Ralph William Bundick III of Hampton. The case will be heard Sept. 10 by the grand jury.

The university suspended Bundick, who was a sophomore, until internal and police investigations were completed, a school official said in April.

The student was attacked in Moffett Hall - a coed campus dormitory - about 8:30 p.m. April 12. The light in the stairwell where the attack occurred would not work, according to testimony.

"As I walked in [Moffett Hall] he held the door and waited for me to go up the steps and landing ... put an arm around me and forced me to the floor," the woman testified.

As she screamed, the woman testified, Bundick beat her head into the floor "10 [to] 15 times."

"I began to see white," she said.

That's when the woman said she stopped screaming and Bundick tried to remove her pants. She testified that a sound in the dorm apparently scared Bundick and he fled.

It took five staples to close the wound in her scalp caused by beating, she said.

Bill Castillejo testified that he had seen Bundick standing near the rear door as he left Moffett moments earlier. When the woman's screams brought Castillejo back to the dorm, he said he saw Bundick leave the dorm and run.

Another student, Jody Bierd, testified that she, too, saw Bundick inside the dorm before the attack and running away afterward.

If convicted, Bundick faces up to 10 years in prison for attempted rape and five to 20 years for malicious wounding.
