A 24-year-old man was charged with raping his girlfriend Sunday night after police went to his Northwest home in response to a call about a woman screaming for help.
Eric Leroy Montgomery was charged with rape and assault and battery. Bond was set at $30,000, but he remained in the Roanoke City Jail Monday.
Police gave this account: Montgomery's girlfriend had moved back into his house after he threatened to kill their daughter and the woman's father if she did not return. The two then argued over money. Police said Montgomery then beat the girlfriend in the head with a fire extinguisher and raped her in the presence of their 18-month-old daughter.
The woman was treated at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital for head, leg and chest injuries.
In another incident, a 29-year-old Southwest Roanoke man was charged Saturday with aggravated sexual battery of a 7-year-old girl. Police said the girl told her mother she was walking to a store near Lincoln Terrace housing development about 6 p.m. A man began walking with her and partially disrobed her. Shortly afterward, Curtis Hall Payne was arrested and charged. Police said the girl identified him as the assailant.
