CITADEL PLAN FOR WOMEN WORKED OUT

Pregnant cadets can return to The Citadel after giving birth, and latches and curtains will be required only on the rooms of women cadets, according to a compromise worked out Monday.

Lawyers for The Citadel and the Justice Department had been arguing over the state-funded military college's plan for admitting women until U.S. District Judge Weston Houck told them to settle their differences outside his courtroom Monday.

Three women are scheduled to arrive on campus Aug. 24. They will be the first to enroll since the college changed its all-male policy in June, two days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a similar all-male policy at Virginia Military Institute was unconstitutional.

Houck said he wants the women treated the same as men, except in providing privacy for bathing and dressing.

Also, the judge refused to vacate his 1994 order declaring The Citadel's all-male policy unconstitutional, meaning he retains oversight over admitting women.

``That order is the link between this case and VMI,'' Houck said. ``This case is not mooted; it continues. There are many issues to be decided.''
