CHITWOOD, Irna Robertson, 91, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 11, 1996, in a local nursing home. She was a graduate of Radford College and a retired school teacher with the Roanoke City School System, having taught for 27 years. Mrs. Chitwood was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Walter Smith Chitwood; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Walter Chitwood and Lois Chitwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Guy Halsey, Rosemary and Bill Stephens; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, 1996, with Rev. Walter M. Lockett Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. CLARK, Howard Ralph, 76, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 10, 1996. Mr. Clark was a combat Army veteran of World War II, 82nd Airborne and made three combat jumps. He was a retired insurance agent. He was a resident of the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke and passed away there. Surviving are his wife, Margaret L. Clark; his daughter, Linda M. Clark; his brother, Robert L. Clark; his sister, Mildred Phillippi; his three grandchildren, Kristina Marie Hanna, Samantha Louise Hanna, Floyd Douglas Hanna. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 1001 Franklin Rd., S.W., Roanoke.

CONLEY, Charles Robert, 70, of Route 2, Narrows, died Sunday, August 11, 1996, at his residence on Wolf Creek. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on November 9, 1925, and was the son of the late Elijah and Mae Gore Conley. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Clayton Conley; and a sister, Jessie Nelson. He was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post #68 and V.F.W. Post #6000, both of Narrows. He was a retired employee of the Hoechst/Celanese Fibers Company Plant at Narrows and was a member of the Hales Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Carr Conley; a son and his wife, Dr. Thomas A. Conley and Dr. Delilah F. Conley of Tazewell; a brother and his wife, Aubrey Clyde and Rachael Conley, Stephenson, W.Va.; two sisters and their husbands, Emma and Gartha Lester, Lucy and Raymond Campbell, both of Narrows; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hales Chapel United Methodist Church, Route 2, Narrows, with Rev. Judy Long and Rev. J. D. Clark officiating. FOSTER, Margaret Jackson, (``Patsy''), 80, of Dante, died Saturday, August 10, 1996, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong member of Long's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Dante, having served in many positions of leadership. She was a member of the Court of Calanthe No. 256, Dante. Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; two brothers; and one grandson. Survivors include her husband, Richard Foster; one daughter, Nancy F. Nowlin, Christiansburg ; four sons, Wallace A. Foster, Hampton, Charles A. Foster, Cleveland, Ohio, Spencer L. GANNAWAY, Thomas A., of Route 1, Draper, a retired farmer, died Sunday, August 11, 1996 at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem, Va. He was born in Pulaski County on October 14, 1917, and was the son of the late John L. and Iva A. Gannaway. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy L. Gannaway; and a sister, Mary Trigg Gilmer. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church. He was a past director of the Skyline Soil Conservation District and a past member of the Draper Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Mary P. Gannaway, Draper; son and daugher-in-law, Thomas P. and Judith C. Gannaway, Vinton, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia C. Gannaway and Daniel E. McKeever, Laconia, N.H.; two grandchildren, Thomas P. Gannaway II, Vinton, Ohio, Allison Gannaway, Vinton, Ohio; two sisters, Catherine Gannaway, Draper, Ruth G. Bryson, Draper. HERBERT, Leo, 84, of Springville, Utah, formerly of Blacksburg, Va., passed from this life, Saturday, August 10, 1996 at his home, after a valiant struggle with cancer. He was born in Douglas, Arizona, on March 7, 1912, to Kumen Onhi and Urilla Whipple Herbert. He married Ruth Parker on June 30, 1937, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died on April 20, 1981. Leo received his Bachelors degree in 1939 from Brigham Young University. He earned an MBA degree in 1941 and a Ph.D. in 1944 from Louisiana State University. He was a Certified Public Accountant in Utah and Louisiana. Dr. Herbert held teaching positions at LSU and BYU before becoming Department Head in Bus. Admin. at Louisiana Tech in 1948. He was appointed Asst. State Auditor of Louisiana in 1952. In 1956 he moved to Arlington, Va., and was appointed Director, Office of Staff Management at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for recruiting and training professional accountants. Up on his retirement in 1974, Dr. Herbert became a Professor at Virginia Tech and a consultant to the Comptroller General of the U.S., and the United Nations in Gambia and the Philippines. He has published numerous books and articles on auditing. At the time of his death, he was Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Virginia Tech and was writing a personal favorite book on setting and achieving goals. He was an active member of the LDS Church serving a mission in Arkansas as part of the Central States Mission in the early 1930's. He held numerous positions throughout his life and was called as Patriarch in 1978 in Virginia. He was a man who believed in the importance of education and provided financial support so his children and grandchildren would have the opportunity to attend college. In 1981, the Leo Herbert Accounting Scholarship at Virginia Tech was established. Dr. Herbert is survived by a son and two daughters and their spouses, Frank and Ina Lee Herbert, Draper, Utah; Dahnelle and Roger Overly, Springville, Utah, and Judy Spencer and William Harris, Hyattsville, Md.; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 14, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the Kolob Stake Center, 1230 South 500 East. Friends may call at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, Utah, Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m., or Wednesday at the church from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. HOWELL, G. Michael, 51, of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, formerly of Roanoke, Va. died Saturday, August 10, 1996, at his residence, following an illness. Born in Bluefield, W.Va., on July 11, 1945, he was the son of William Raymond and Pauline Perdue Howell of Roanoke, Va. He was the President of the Engineered Construction Division of Pitt-Des Moines, Inc. (PDM) of Pittsburgh, PA. A graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute of Blacksburg, Virginia, he held a B.S. in Building Construction. He was a member of the Dutilh United Methodist Church of Cranberry Twp., PA, the Oakmont Country Club, Pittsburg, PA, and the Hyperion Field Club of Des Moines, Iowa. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Crockett Howell, whom he married on September 16, 1967; his parents, William Raymond and Pauline Perdue Howell of Roanoke, Va.; a son, Michael Lawrence Howell of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Megan Pauline Howell and Mary Kathleen Howell, both of Des Moine, Iowa. HOWELL, Glenn Michael, 51, of Pittsburg, Pa., passed away at his home, Saturday, August 10, 1996. He was a graduate of VPI & SU with a degree in engineering. JEWELL, Rev. James M., 93, of Christiansburg, passed away Monday, August 12, 1996, in Meadowbrook Nursing Home. A minister in the Pentecostal Holiness Church for over seventy-three years, having been licensed in 1922, he served numerous churches in Virginia, West Virginia, and Florida. Rev. Jewell served the Virginia (Appalachian) Pentecostal Holiness Church Conference as Treasurer for 18 years. During this time he located the land and was a leader in the purchase and organization of the Conference Headquarters and campground (Camp Maranatha) in Dublin. A beloved husband and father, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard. He is survived by his wife of over seventy years, Edythe A. Jewell; two sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Ruth Jewell, Wilmington, Del., Rev. Dallas M. and Juanita Jewell, Pulaski; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhea J. and Gordon Christen, Leesburg; one daughter-in-law, Evelyn C. Jewell, Charlotte, N.C. eleven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. OULD, William Robert, 74, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, August 10, 1996 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born July 3, 1922 in Appomattox, son of the late Herman and Ethel Ould. Mr. Ould owned and operated Bill's Auto Parts in Lynchburg. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during World War II. Surviving include his wife, Oris Arthurs Ould, Buena Vista; two sons, William Lyle Ould of Glasgow and Robert Wayne Ould of Roanoke; one daughter, Nanci Lynne Ould of Buena Vista; four grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Butler of Virginia Beach. PELTER, Charles Lewis Sr., 68, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, August 11, 1996, at his home. He was born March 14, 1928, son of Ethel Bryant Pelter and the late North D. Pelter. He was retired from Reeves Brothers. Mr. Pelter was a member of the Bu ena Vista Baptist Church. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Betty McGuire Pelter; two sons, Charles Lewis Pelter Jr. of Linden and Ronald Michael Pelter of Buena Vista; three brothers, Donald K. Pelter of Long Island, N.Y., James V. Pelter and Joseph R. Pelter, both of Buena Vista; two sisters, Ann Marie McManama of Buena Vista and Loretta Jean Whittington of Lexington; and six grandchildren. PETERS, Marvin Glenn, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 11, 1996, at his home. He served in the U.S. Air Force as Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Peters was active in American Legion Post #248, where he served as past Post Commander and past 9th District Commander. He was a life member of the VFW. Mr. Peters retired from General Electric Drive Systems Plant in Salem with over 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Bondurant Peters. Surviving are stepdaughter and her husband, Karinina and Drew Hoffman; three stepgrandchildren, all of California; brother, James A. Peters, Huddleston; friends, Bonnie Thompson and Carl Pollard. RAKES, Margaret P., 60, of Portsmouth, formerly of Montgomery County, died Saturday, August 10, 1996. ROBERTS, Charlie Clyde, 65, of Roanoke, formerly of Salem, died Monday, August 12, 1996 in a Roanoke hospi tal. He was a member of the Salem Church of Christ and was an Elder in the Church of Christ in Huntington, W. Va. He was an MP in the 175th Battalion in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart and Gustia Roberts, and one sister, Gladys Street. He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Roberts; three sisters, Leona Fishel, Barbara Davis, both of Erwin, Tenn., and Eulala Calhoun of Birmingham, Alabama; a brother-in-law, Leon Hensley, Elkton; a special little friend, Bo. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 15, 1996, at 10 a.m. in the Lotz Salem Chapel, with Minister Jim Herron and Brian Orahood officiating. TURMAN Mary Ruth Allison, 92, of Allisonia, passed away Monday, August 12, 1996 in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital. Born March 30, 1904 in Allisonia, Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry Burton Allison and Margaret Worrell Allison. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar (Ed) Lemon Turman. She was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church, Dublin, Va. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Coffman, Bridgewater; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edgar M. VICKERS, Lucy, of Belle Chasse, La., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, August 7, 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Diane; brother, Raymond Sinclair

WALKER, Alma Barger, 73, of Route 1, Eagle Rock, died Sunday, August 11, 1996, at the Brian Center, Low Moor. She was born in Botetourt County on April 8, 1923, daughter of the late Thurston A. and Carrie Willie Kenney Barger. She was a homemaker and member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Walker was the widow of Clarence Simmons Walker and is survived by Bobby and Connie Tolley of Route 1, Eagle Rock; and a sister-in-law, Christine Barger of Route 1, Eagle Rock; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, 11 a.m., from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with Rev. Rob Hoskins officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be W. L. Gleason, Hansford Broughman, Lawrence Chiles, Larry Arthur, Johnny Kern, Howard Johnston, and Henry Broughman. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

WILLIS, Faye Huddleston, 78, of Moneta, died Saturday, August 10, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Henry O. Willis; twin brother and sister-in-law, Ray J. and Viola Huddleston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Claudine (Toni) and Pete Johnson; Frances and Jimmy Nance, sister-in-law, Helen Huddleston; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel, by the Rev. Jim Brown, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive f riends Tuesday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charities or the Emmuas United Methodist Church.
