IN SERVICE

Marine Cpl. Jason A. Bowman recently received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. The medal recognizes Bowman's honest and faithful service during a three-year period. Bowman has achieved and maintained satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record during this time.

Bowman is assigned with 3rd Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan. He is a 1991 graduate of Pulaski County High who joined the Marine Corps in December 1992. He is the son of Mark and Theresa Bowman of Dublin.

Marine Pfc. James B. Clay of Christiansburg recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and was promoted to his present rank. Clay is a 1994 graduate of Christiansburg High. He joined the Marine Corps in December 1995.

Navy Seaman Douglas Tucker recently completed a six-nation maritime exercise aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill. Tucker is home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. A 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School, he joined the Navy in June 1994. He is the son of Warren and Edith Tucker of Pulaski.

Two area men recently joined the United States Army under the Delayed Enlistment Program. Those who enlist under the delayed enlistment program have up to one year before reporting for basic military training. They are:

nShannon J. Lawson, son of Debra Lawson of Pulaski, started basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., in July.

nEric S. Cumbee of Narrows, will report for military basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo., in September. Cumbee is a 1996 graduate of Narrows High School. He is the son of Fredia C. Phillips of Glen Lyn and Earl D. Cumbee Sr. of Narrows.

Navy Lt. j.g.Stacie L. Fain recently reported for duty with Helicopter Training Squadron 18 at the Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Fla. Fain is a graduate of Virginia Tech. She joined the Navy in May 1993. She is the daughter of Gerald and Laurel Fain of Draper.

Two area men recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. The program was eight-weeks long. They are:

Navy Seaman Recruit Carl E. Powers, a 1995 graduate of Blacksburg High School. He is the son of Lorna L. Powers of Pulaski and Carl E. Powers Sr. of Blacksburg.

Navy Seaman Recruit Jeffrey R. Putnam, a 1995 graduate of Christiansburg High School. He is the son of Philip and Karen Putnam of Christiansburg.

Navy Seaman Jeremiah H. Snapp recently graduated from Basic Cryptologic Technician (operator) School at the Naval Technical Training Center Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla. Snapp joined the Navy in November 1995. He is the son of John B. and Ann K. Snapp of Shawsville.
