Day-care registration

CHRISTIANSBURG - Registration is under way at Growing Tree Childhood Center on Electric Way in Christiansburg. Classes start Sept. 3. Only 10 spots are open. Before and after school care will be available for children from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, call Kate deGastyne at 382-1357.

Donations sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County chapter of the Armed Forces Emergency Service (AFES) is collecting donations for U.S. military forces deployed to Croatia and Hungary in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. Items such as video movies, candy, cards and microwave popcorn may be donated to the following collection sites:

American Red Cross, 16 E. Main St., Christiansburg; New River Valley Donor Center, 130 W. Jackson St., Blacksburg during blood collection hours on Tuesday 12-6 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Food Lion in Christiansburg, Harris Teeter in Blacksburg; Kroger on W. Main Street in Christiansburg and Kroger in Blacksburg.

Divorce seminar

BLACKSBURG - The Mental Health Association is offering a Children of Divorce Seminar, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Seminars are held at the Blacksburg Police Department Community Room on Clay Street. Cost is $35.

The program is an educational seminar specifically designed for separating or divorcing parents of children under the age of 19. Topics will include helping children adjust to separation; helpful ways to communicate to children about divorce; planning holidays and vacations and how to promote self-esteem in children .

D.A.R.E. pool party

There will be a "back to school" D.A.R.E. Day Aug. 20 from noon to 6 p.m. at the new Frog Pond off U.S. 460 in Christiansburg. Fun and games, along with safety handouts, will kick-off the back to school program. In addition, scuba demonstrations will be conducted by members of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Underwater Recovery Team. Members of the Christiansburg Fire Department and Rescue Squad also will be present.

The program is sponsored by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. County D.A.R.E. and crime prevention officers, along with D.A.R.E. officers from adjoining jurisdictions also will be present.
