HOKIES EARN 1ST TOUR WIN IN EUROPE

Keefe Matthews scored 23 points and Ace Custis added 20 as the Virginia Tech men's basketball team evened its record in Europe with an 87-77 victory Wednesday over Lugano in Switzerland.

Alvaro Tor contributed 12 points and six rebounds and Custis also had six boards for the Hokies, who dropped a 101-97 decision to Varese of Milan, Italy, on Tuesday.

The Hokies trailed 37-36 at halftime, but Custis scored the first basket of the second half to put Virginia Tech in front and they never looked back.

``We did not play as well tonight as we did in the first game against the Italians, but this was a good win for us,'' said Bill Foster, Tech's coach. ``I was extremely pleased with the play of our big men, Keefe and Alvaro. They are building confidence, and that's important.''

The Hokies travel to Antibes, France, for a two-day tournament during the weekend.

Ned Baber of Roanoke shot a 4-over-par 76 at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va., to lead qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur golf championship.

It will be the second Senior Amateur appearance for Baber, 59, who played in the championship when it was held in Charlottesville three years ago. Baber's victory in the qualifier follows a victory by his son, Miller, in the Valley Amateur during the past weekend.

Bob Moyers of New Market shot a 77 to claim one of the two Senior Amateur spots available in the West Virginia qualifying. The championship will be held Sept.4-6 in Williamston, Mass.

Billy King of Roanoke's Blue Hills Golf Club shot even-par 72 and was fourth, two strokes off the pace, at the Middle Atlantic PGA Senior/Quarter Century Championship in Ijamsville, Md.

Bruce Lehnhard set the pace at 70, and Frank Herrelko and Mike McGinnis were tied for second at Holly Hills Country Club. The tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the Senior Club Professional Qualifier in October, concludes with 18 holes today.

The North Roanoke all-stars wasted numerous scoring opportunities and were eliminated from the Ponytails Dixie World Series softball tournament in Aiken, S.C., with a 4-3 loss to Florida.

The team of 11- and 12-year-olds took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of fifth inning behind the hitting of Christie Gauldin, but Florida rallied for the victory as North Roanoke left 11 runners on base. Gauldin finished 3-for-4 with two doubles.
