Volunteers needed for school program
The city of Roanoke is offering a Volunteer Leadership Training Program Aug. 19-29 for adults interested in leading children's groups in the Adventure for Kids after-school program at Fallon Park and Hurt Park elementary schools. Volunteers will receive an additional 100 hours of on-site training during the school year.
Volunteers will receive a stipend of $50 each per month. Each trainee will be required to volunteer for at least one additional year after the training year.

Roanoke woman bikes to Atlanta
Roanoke's Barbara Duerk will cycle more than 500 miles from Lynchburg to Atlanta beginning Aug. 23 in support of Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley. Duerk will join a Lynchburg group for the eight-day trip and is scheduled to arrive in Atlanta Aug. 30.
In Atlanta, the group will take part in the 20th anniversary celebration of Habitat for Humanity.
Money raised in support of Duerk's ride will benefit the fall construction of a Habitat home on Virginia Avenue Northwest.

Runners wanted for women's 5K
The Women's Distance Festival 5K Run will be held Aug. 24 at 8:30 a.m. Race-day registration will be from 7-8 a.m. at the footbridge on Wiley Drive. The entry fee is $12. Medals will be awarded to the top three runners in several age groups and to the first-place winners in the mother-daughter and sisters categories.

Adoption agency seeks families
ABC Adoption Services, a licensed, non profit adoption agency placing children from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Central and South America with American families, has scheduled an International Adoption Parent Preparation/Homestudy series for Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Program participants will be evaluated and given a completed dossier ready for presentation to the country of choice for the assignment of a child. The process takes about three months.

LOA looking for senior comanions
LOA Area Agency on Aging has immediate openings for men and women over age 60 to become senior companion volunteers. They volunteer 20 hours per week in nursing homes, adult day care and private homes.

Registration set for city schools
Students new to the Roanoke city school system and those who have moved within the city must register at the school they will attend by Aug. 30.
Registration dates are Aug. 19-22 and 27-28 from 8 a.m to 3 p.m each day. On Aug. 29, registration for kindergarten through eighth grade will be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.; students in grades nine through 12 may register from 8 a.m. to noon. After Aug. 30, all students must enroll after 3 p.m.
Parents registering children in kindergarten and first grade must bring a copy of their child's original birth certificate, a completed physical examination form, the child's social security number and a record of immunization.
Kindergarten orientation will be held Aug. 29 at 10 a.m.; sixth-grade orientation will be held Aug. 30 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.; ninth-graders may attend orientation on Aug. 30 from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Women's clubs hold craft show Sept. 27-28
The Junior Woman's Club and the Woman's Club of Vinton will hold their annual Fall Craft Show and Sale at Lake Drive Plaza in Vinton Sept. 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local craftsmen will sell and demonstrate their crafts. The proceeds from the show support community projects of both clubs, including William Byrd High School scholarships, area rescue squads and the Ronald McDonald House.
