A former Fork Union basketball star died Wednesday when a car in which he was a passenger hit a telephone pole, flipped and skidded across the road, said authorities in Fairmont, W.Va.
Gyprain Bailey, 21, from York, Pa., was pronounced dead at York Hospital after the crash early Wednesday, said County Coroner Kathryn Fourhman.
``It's a real shock to all of us,'' said coach Butch Haswell of Fairmont State, where Bailey was a redshirt freshman guard. ``To have one of our players die in an auto accident is awful.''
Bailey was a native of Queens, N.Y., and attended Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. He played two years at Fork Union, averaging 18.7 points, 8.0 assists, 6.0 steals and 4.0 rebounds as a senior.
The Times West Virginian of Fairmont reported Thursday that the car was stolen from a convenience store in York.
The driver, Ellis Ramos, 18, of York, fled on foot after the accident, but was arrested on charges stemming from the accident, the newspaper reported. A second passenger, Carolyn Morris, 18, of York, injured her legs and was in satisfactory condition at York Hospital, the newspaper reported.
