President Clinton nominated former Rep. Leslie Byrne for director of the Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Consumer Affairs, the White House announced Thursday.
Byrne, 49, a Democrat, was elected in 1992 as the first female member of Congress from Virginia. She served one term. Byrne now is a lecturer and political consultant in Falls Church.
As consumer affairs director, Byrne would report to the president, advising the White House and HHS Secretary Donna Shalala on consumer-related issues.
Also Thursday, Clinton appointed Ronald S. Johnson to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and Philip Lader to the board of governors for the American National Red Cross.
Johnson has served as New York City's AIDS policy coordinator since 1992. Lader, of Hilton Head, S.C., is administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
