WILSON, Kathleen, 38, of Salem, died Tuesday night, August 13, 1996, after surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Kathy was born in Shelbyville, Ind., but grew up in Pittsburgh. She graduated Pennsylvania State University with a degree in journalism. She worked in the bridal directory department at Bamberger's Department Store in New Jersey and then at Women's Wear Daily in New York City. She moved to the Roanoke Valley with her then-husband, Harry Wilson, in 1986. From 1987 through 1989 she commuted back and forth between Roanoke and New York City, where she was editor of Gift Reporter, a respected trade publication. She moved back to the Roanoke Valley f ull-time in 1989, first working in the public relations office at Virginia Tech and then becoming a columnist and feature writer for The Roanoke Times. Her ``Mingling'' column made her a well-known figure on the Roanoke Valley social scene. She covered everything from tractor pulls to black-tie events. She also worked as a volunteer at the Roanoke AIDS Project. As a reporter, she had a talent for stumbling onto--and into--stories. Last year she was driving home on Interstate 581 when she came up on a fiery tractor trailer wreck. She scrambled up a steep embankment to see if she could help. She found the injured trucker's wallet and made sure rescue workers got it to him. Then she interviewed the rescuers and came back and helped write a dramatic story about the accident. Later she visited the injured trucker at the hospital, just to make sure he was doing OK. Kathy had a way of making friends everywhere -- at parties, at work, at the beauty parlor, on the internet. She demanded little from the people close to her, but gave a great deal. She was always willing to put her problems aside and help other people. She kept her phone ringer on even late at night. She told her friends to call her if they needed someone to talk to, no matter what the hour. Kathy had been ill off and on for the past year, so she didn't get out to see her friends and Mingling acquaintances as much as she once did. Before she went into the hospital, she was looking forward to returning to volunteer work and writing free-lance articles for national magazines. She is survived by three sisters, Patricia Wadlow, Peggy Williamson, and Julia Mineo, all of Pittsburgh; one niece, Amanda Wadlow; one nephew, Kenneth Williamson; and her ex-husband, Harry Wilson of Fincastle. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in Antrim Chapel at Roanoke College. The Rev. R. Paul Henrickson, Chaplain of the college, will officiate. Her ashes will be scattered over the Blue Ridge Mountains by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Roanoke AIDS Project, 331 King George Ave., S. W., Roanoke, Va. 24015, or the West End Center for Youth, P.O. Box 4562, Roanoke, Va. 24015.
