The Mint Museum of Art has begun its 60th anniversary year with a traveling exhibition of works by Southern exponents of America's Arts and Crafts movement.
About 125 works are on show, including pottery, textiles, furniture, wood working, glass, basketry, metalwork and paintings, made in the early 20th century by artisans throughout the Southeast.
The exhibition and its catalog focus on the origins of this trans-Appalachian handicraft that has made the South a leading region of craft production today. The range of creative activity indicated is wide, but the strong contribution made by women comes across clearly.
Documentary photographs, architectural items, costumes and accessories complement the artworks and help tell the story.
``Southern Arts and Crafts 1809-1940'' remains on show at the Mint Museum through Sept. 29, and then will travel to:
The Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Ga., Nov. 7-Dec. 29.
Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 19-March 29, 1997
