A state education official will become acting president of Rappahannock Community College next month if a Michigan judge decides there's enough evidence to send John H. Upton, the school's president, to trial on a charge of murdering his wife.
Anne-Marie McCartan, the Virginia Community College System's vice chancellor for academic services and research, was introduced at a news conference Thursday at the college's Glenns campus.
Arnold Oliver, chancellor of the two-year college system, said McCartan will serve as acting president starting Sept. 3 ``until a permanent president occupies that position.''
McCartan has a doctorate in education from Harvard University. She has taught at the College of William and Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Massachusetts and Harvard.
A preliminary hearing for Upton will be held Aug. 26 in Allegan County, Mich. Upton's wife, Kathleen, 63, was found dead July 2 in the couple's Lake Michigan vacation cottage. She had been bludgeoned, stabbed and smothered.
